Introduction
Omid Bayat is a researcher and PhD candidate at the University of Zurich. Omid does research in geomorphology, geochronology and soil science. His current project is "Tracing palaeo-environmental conditions of the late Middle Pleistocene to the Holocene in a climatically dynamic region of Western Asia (TERRAS)" which is supported by Swiss National Science Foundation.

Desert rhizoliths are generally found as weathered, broken and scattered samples on dune field surface, but rarely in-situ in their initial states buried under the soil of desert in the Badain Jaran Desert, northwest China. This study offers an assessment of the morphological, mineralogical, and chemical properties of intact and in-situ rhizoliths...

The stable isotopic composition of pedogenic carbonate forms in equilibrium with environmental parameters and, thus, records palaeoenvironmental signals. The aims of this study are to synthesize available data on the stable isotopic composition of Quaternary pedogenic carbonates in calcareous parent materials of Iran and to decipher paleoenvironmen...
Article
In the high plateau region of central Iran, there is both a lack of information on calcic soil processes and aspects of Quaternary paleoclimate. Thus, the research discussed here was undertaken as a first step to assess the utility of calcic soil research in the region. The properties and isotope composition of calcic soils was studied on a complex...
Article
Despite the occurrence of pedogenic carbonates in loess/paleosol sequences of northern and northeastern Iran, there is no information about stable isotope geochemistry of pedogenic carbonates in these regions. This paper presents the first stable isotope data on pedogenic carbonates in loess derived soils of northeastern Iran, southern Eurasian loe...

Although central Iran is pivotal for palaeoclimatic correlations, palaeoenvironmental data for this region is very sparse and a reliable chronology for pedogenic features is lacking. We therefore tried to answer the question how the environmental conditions and, in particular, the climate developed over time by using the isotopic signatures of pedo...
Article
Afghanistan is located in the Eurasian loess belt, however, there is little information on the soils in the area. Loess has covered the Herat Plain in western Herat City, Afghanistan. Despite the diversity of landform and parent material, there is no information on the soil and landform evolution in this area. The objectives of this study were to i...

Past environments of the Earth's surface may be deciphered and modelled using stable isotopes along with mineralogical, sedimentological, biological, palaeontological, chemical and climatological methodologies. This volume is devoted to studies investigating the distribution of stable isotopes in precipitation and groundwaters and their interaction...

Alluvial fans are one of the most important landforms in geomorphological and paloenvironmental studies. The objective of this study was the application of clay mineral assemblages and micromorphological properties of the studied paleosols in the geomorphic surfaces of an alluvial fan in the eastern Isfahan as proxies for paleoenvironmental and pal...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
Pedogenic carbonates in palesols are widely used for plaeoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstruction. The objective of this study was to determine the carbon isotopic composition of secondary carbonates of loess derived soils of southern Mashhad to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions. Carbon and oxygen isotopic composition of pedogenic ca...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
Stable isotopes in pedogenic carbonates can provide information for geomorphic evolution of landscapes, past atmospheric CO2 partial pressure fluctuations, paleotemperatures and local and global vegetation changes. Loess/paleosol sequences and loess derived soils in the north and Northeastern Iran arean excellent archive for Quaternary environmenta...

Despite of suitable geological and climatic conditions for forming and evolution of alluvial fans and importance of this landform as soil and water resources in arid regions, there are limited studies about this landform in Iran. In the present study, evolution and pedogenic development of geomorphic surfaces of an alluvial fan in Eastern Isfahan w...

Clay minerals in paleosols of an alluvial fan in eastern Isfahan were studied. The results show that in argillic horizons of the Qf1 geomorphic surface pedogenic smectite and in calcic horizons pedogenic palygorskite are dominant minerals. Argillic horizons are formed in more moist condition than the calcic horizons and an increase in smectite valu...

Only a few studies have been carried out on the relationship between geomorphic surfaces, isotope geochemistry of pedogenic carbonates and paleoecological changes in Iranian arid lands. The aims of this study were to investigate the pedogenic development of geomorphic surfaces in eastern Isfahan and to understand the ecologicological and climatic c...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
One of the methods to investigate the climate change and its consequences is the application of models based on past evidences, present information and modern technology. The objective of this study was to use pedogenic indicators for describing paleoclimate in an arid zone of Isfahan. Selected soil profiles were studied and their diagnostic subsur...
