Intertidal areas, which emerge during low tide, form a vital link between terrestrial and marine environments. Seagrasses, a well-studied intertidal habitat, provide a multitude of different ecosystem goods and services. However, owing to their relatively high exposure to anthropogenic impacts, seagrasss meadows and other intertidal habitats have s...
Seagrasses are marine flowering plants that form extensive meadows from the inter-tidal zone up to ~50 m depth. As biological and ecological Essential Biodiversity Variables, seagrass cover and composition provide a wide range of ecosystem services. Inter-tidal seagrass meadows provide services to many ecosystems, so monitoring their occurrence, ex...
The recent expansion of wild Pacific oysters already had negative repercussions on sites in Europe and has raised further concerns over their potential harmful impact on the balance of biomes within protected areas. Monitoring their colonisation, especially at early stages, has become an urgent ecological issue. Current efforts to monitor wild Paci...
Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (D&S IFCA) understands the communal and ecological importance of the public beds and have undertaken survey work to establish the population structure, biomass, and distribution of cockles within the areas of the estuary where cockles are known to be present. This report has been created...
The objective of this project is to carry out annual surveys of the public mussel beds on the Taw-Torridge Estuary, to define where the mussel beds are and accurately map, using GIS, the overall extent of each of the mussel beds. Devon & Severn IFCA will undertake a stock assessment on each of the beds to estimate the density of mussels on the beds...

A stock assessment survey for Doryteuthis gahi (Falkland calamari) was conducted in the ‘Loligo Box’ from 14th to 28th July 2018. Fifty-three scientific trawls were taken during the survey; 39 fixed-station and 14 adaptive trawls. The scientific catch of the survey was 510.33 tonnes D. gahi.

During a survey of fish communities associated with seagrass (Zostera marina) beds in South Arran MPA (Scotland, UK) an unusual acanthocephalan parasite was recovered from the gut of sea scorpions (Taurulus bubalis; Scorpaenidae).
The primary objective of the survey was to assess the biomass and abundance of demersal commercial species encountered in the survey zone. Biological data (length, sex, maturity, otoliths and stomach contents) were collected for a sample of each species at each station and used to describe the stock in February. In the present report, biological da...
Fish were sampled by fyke net over two weeks in June - July 2016 from Zostera marine beds in South Arran MPA, Scotland. Beds with higher shoot density supported more species and greater abundances of mobile epifauna than low density beds. Commercially important crustaceans were only found in high density areas.
Shallow subtidal Zostera marina segrass beds in the recently declared South Arram MPA were mapped using GPS in June 2016, and compared to a similar survey in 2012. There wsa found to be an 88 % decline in extent between the two surveys, with a concommitant increase in the abundance of Srgassum muticum, an invasive introduced brown alga. It is sugge...
It is widely accepted that seagrass habitats support specific communities distinct from surrounding habitats. However, there is little data supporting this for temperate seagrasses. This study took advantage of small, discrete infralittoral Zostera marina L. beds in the newly designated (2016) South Arran MPA to assess the distinctiveness of epibio...
