Introduction
My research interests:
1. Climate change education for sustainable development in formal and non-formal education in Baltic region.
2. Carbon cycling: field measurements and analysis of CO2 fluxes at the leaf, soil, and ecosystem levels for croplands, grasslands, and trees (urban and forest vegetation).
3. Urban green areas under climate change threats (CO2 fluxes and tolerance of the tree species on the heat waves).
4. Ecological role games as a tool for sustainability education.

The role of universities in shaping the future of society cannot be underestimated, as current students could become the potential leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, universities should serve as a basis for preparing future socio-ecological skills and values essential for a sustainable living, by reorienting current unsustainable ways of thinking and...
There is uncertainty on whether universities, being responsible for shaping the future of society, properly address current ecological and socio-cultural challenges caused by climate change. In Ukraine, Education for Sustainable Development, and Climate Change Education in particular, are neither clearly visible in official policy documents on high...
The desk study “Localizing Sustainable Development Goals in the EAP
Countries” includes three country mappings of relevant stakeholders,
challenges and needs and the overall state of SDG implementation in
Belarus, Ukraine and Georgia. The study provides a basic overview of
how these countries are working to implement the UN 2030 Agenda with
a parti...
The frequency of extreme heat effects has recently increased in European cities due to climate change. The problem appears to be critical in urban areas where manmade structures significantly alter the temperature balance, thus highlighting the importance of sustainable management and proper inventory of urban green zones. Based on this, the paper...
A frequency of extreme heat effects, critical in urban areas due to lower surface albedo and less air circulation, has recently increased in big cities of the Baltic region, being enforced by climate change. At the same time, urbanization enlarges the problem of urban-induced warming by massive replacements of natural vegetation with manmade constr...

Modern societies depend heavily on the availability of secure, affordable and clean energy. While energy security challenges are usually dealt at the national and international levels, many opportunities exist at the local level to improve the...
The paper provides an overview of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) evolution and implementation barriers in universities of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE),
focusing on challenges to the incorporation and institutionalization of ESD in two leading universities: Riga Technical University in Latvia and National University of Kyiv-Mohyla A...

The idea to promote the environmental benefits of the “green” way of provision goods and services has appeared in the late 1960s; by the early 1980s companies across a variety of sectors started to promote the “greenness” of their products in order to benefit from the growing ecological awareness of consumers [4]. This has created a necessity to in...
Climate change is one of the most acute problems humanity is facing nowadays. At the
same time, the school curriculum in Ukraine in most cases does not include up-to-date, practically
oriented knowledge about climate change threats. For this reason this study describes examples of
well-known climate change games, translated and adaptated for use in...
Khalaim O. O. Methods of Carbon Balance Estimation in Forest Ecosystems: Perspectives of Chamber Gas Exchange Method Usage in Ukrainian Carpathians
Article describes the scientific relevance of carbon fluxes research in forest ecosystems under the global climate change. The necessity of field measurements of CO2 fluxes in Ukrainian Carpathians is...

The research aimed an estimation of the seasonal carbon fluxes (March – October) and analysis of the potential impact of altered precipitation on these fluxes in dry grasslands of South-Eastern Crimea. Calculations are based on the field data of CO2 fluxes (gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), net ecosystem exchange (NEE), ecosystem respiration (ER)...

Ця брошура містить результати досліджень, проведених в рамках проекту «Управління зеленими зонами як елемент адаптації до зміни клімату в містах», спрямованого на підвищення адаптивного потенціалу...
Посібник екологічних ігор з тематики зміни клімату
The article is devoted to investigation of variations in autumn-winter-spring total precipitations (AWSP)
at the geo-botanic station of the Biosphere Reserve “Askania-Nova” (dry steppe on the research plot “Stara”, southern part of Ukraine) and its in捯uence on the net primary production (NPP) of plant as-
sociations in ecological range (terrain) “...
The influence of altered precipitation on gross productivity and respiration of grasslands in South-Eastern Crimea (Karadag Nature Reserve) in 2012–2013 was investigated. The positive correlation between wetting and productivity was found; soil humidity has proven to be a better indicator of wetting influence on productivity than average monthly pr...
ID:128 Session1: Ecosystem responses to climate variability and weather extremes In recent decades about 40 precipitation (PPT) experiments have been initiated in grassland ecosystems, mostly in the USA and Western Europe. Complementing the worldwide database of PPT experiments, in 2011 we initiated a project called “Nonlinear response of Ukrainian...

The project supported by National Geographic Society; its aim is to develop a scientific basis for strategic planning of adaptation of urban green areas and citizens to climate change in Ukraine.
The urban population of the Ukrainian cities is badly distinguishing the negative consequences of climate change in their living area. Also, it is no direct field measurements of CO2 fluxes (emission and assimilation) in urban ecosystems in Ukraine, organized in a systematic way. We have a gap in field data of CO2 fluxes for our big cities and living suburbs, which could be helpful in estimating the CO2 emissions from cities, living conditions, and effect of urban greening. Also, there is no any database for decision making of local authorities regarding climate change mitigation in cities, as well as data evidence for local societies to push the local authorities to be more active in solving climate change negative consequences (f.i., heat islands and heat waves).
The project aims to fill this gap. For the first time in Ukraine, we propose to study in detail the functioning of urban green areas as a tool of adaptation of urban population to the negative effects of the climate change (heat waves) by using the up-to-date techniques for studying the effectiveness of cooling by the city green areas in Kyiv: high-resolution thermal mapping with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), processing and classification of data from satellite images, measuring air CO2 fluxes with a precision portable gas analyzer (Qubit Systems, Canada).
Based on the research results, we will draw recommendations:
(1) for urban Public Utility Companies about planting management and planning (species, density, types of greening etc.)
(2) for national and city authorities – legislation improvements.
Also, we will highlight the results for locals to draw a completed picture of cause-effect links between CO2 emissions, climate change and quality of their urban living.
The project aims analyzing main barriers and challenges of Education for Sustainable Development in both formal and non-formal education in Ukraine, with a specific focus on ecological and climate change topics, within Central and Eastern Europe context. It could be relevant to investigate a way to transform a post-Soviet old-fashioned system of formal (secondary and higher) education by implementation of newer methods, modernization of the curricula, legislation improvements, and a system of bottom-up motivation for educators to act in conditions of economic crisis and low salaries in Ukraine.
