Authors present this research at a time when Latvia’s possible deposit return system (DRS) is being discussed and evaluated. A beverage package deposit return system is a measure which deals with the reduction of the most visible part of littering in the urban and natural environment, as well as contributes to increasing recycling targets, especial...
The task of assembling and calculating spectrally significant lines of Vitamin D2 and D3 is related to a wider goal of establishing if it is possible to develop non-invasive optical sensors for these substances present at concentrations on the order of tens of nmol/L. Such a non-invasive in vivo sensor would be helpful for medical considerations, a...
Three linear equations are proposed as quantum-mechanical equations for the free propagating photons. The solution of these equations is the vector potential of the electromagnetic field and it is a product of the Gaussian functions for the transverse coordinates and the eigenfunction of the harmonic oscillator for the longitudinal coordinate. This...
Computer vision is an interdisciplinary field that deals with how computers can be made for gaining high-level understanding from digital images or videos. Fish detection and monitoring is an important topic in computer vision. The growth of high-powered computers, the
evolution of high-quality video cameras with low cost and the growing need for a...
Collection of extended abstracts delivered at the 4th International conference "Quantum Optics and Photonics 2021", 22–23 April 2021, Riga

The study establishes optically relevant lines by modelling ergocalciferol (D2) and cholecalciferol (D3) and compare these to measured and earlier reported absorption and Raman spectra lines. This is a step to reach a further goal of finding if minute Vitamin D (D2 and D3) concentration changes could be determined so that a non-invasive sensor coul...
Density functional theory (DFT)-calculated Infrared and Raman spectra of Vitamin D2 and D3 are presented. The calculated results are compared with each other and with available experimental data. Applicability of Raman spectra for non-invasive optical Vitamin D sensors is discussed.
A new nonlinear equation for the description of the localized in space, 3D electromagnetic solitons, simpler than previously considered, is proposed. The new equation formally can be reduced to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NSE), but the essential differences between them are discussed. In this model, each point in the field of the soliton os...
In this article, we focus on the improvement of underwater images. The observation of this type of images shows that the rendering of ocean scenes is very variable. This one is indeed very dependent on the site of acquisition and chemical composition of the waters. The constitution of underwater images by a sensor is the result of the interaction o...
INTRODUCTION One of the main global environmental problems we are facing is the increasing the amount of waste. There are numerous policy instruments used to reduce the environmental impact of packaging. Many EU member states use producer levies, packaging and resource taxes, deposit-refund systems and producer responsibility systems (Bailey, 2017;...
The previously proposed three-dimensional soliton model of a photon propagating in vacuum is modified to describe its propagation in a homogeneous linear dielectric medium. The one-soliton solution of the derived nonlinear equation correctly predicts the energy and the Abraham and Minkowski momenta of the photon in dielectrics. A new nonlinear equa...
The loss of some lexical material in simultaneous interpretation happens often. It can be reduced with preparation if a speech is provided well in advance or by following techniques described in the interpretation guides. Speeches to interpret are not always available well in advance. When working into English additional techniques can be used in o...
Water quality and anthropogenic loads in many, but not all, cases are related. Some water quality monitoring programs analyse samples for the presence of Escherichia coli. These bacteria can come from humans and animals. Human‐attributable effluent contains optical brighteners (OBs) from detergents. A convenient and affordable optical quantitative...
The field of environmental sensors has been developing driven by the Baltic Sea environmental considerations. The authors propose the use of optical methods for developing sensitive, selective and low cost approach to address water media emitted matter research. An optical method to detect the human anthropogenic load presence in water bodies by me...

The crystallization behaviour of Fe70-xCr20MoxB10(x = 0 to 8) amorphous alloy ribbons prepared by melt spinning has been investigated by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy. As-spun Fe70Cr20B10 consists of polycrystaline tetragonal M3B. Addition of Mo increases the tendency to form an amorphous st...
We present a study of laser pulse induced crystallization and amorphization in SbxSc1−x films. The time required to reach stable amorphous state after the pulse increases with exciting pulse length and becomes constant when stationary temperature field is approached by the end of the pulse. The time dependence of the excited spot's local temperatur...

Latvia’s possible deposit return system (DRS) is being discussed and evaluated. A beverage package deposit return system is a measure which deals with the reduction of the most visible part of littering in the urban and natural environment, as well as contributes to increasing recycling targets, especially in the light of the European Union’s Circular Economy Package and the related EU Strategy for Plastics which sets forth a high collection rate for PET bottles. In an environment of increased cost sensitization for the producers’ responsibility systems, DRS provides cost efficiency through retailers’ engagement, which is especially suitable for countries such as Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, where there are large rural areas with low population density. In addition, DRS provides the basis for potential packaging reuse/refilling systems, which is important in relation to waste prevention and the development of resource efficient packaging systems. For Latvia this all comes along with successful examples of deposit return systems in other Baltic States and a wider momentum for deposit use in other countries.
