Late-life depression is a condition that affects an ever-growing share of the population in ageing societies. While depression prevalence varies across countries for a myriad of reasons, generational factors, expressed in the shared experience of birth cohorts, may also play a part in such differentials. This paper describes the presence of age, pe...

Smoking among Spanish women has increased during the last 50 years and is considered by some authors a modern epidemic. However, mortality risk by cohorts may differ at a regional level, given that health inequalities (and the determinants of smoking and its consequences) are regionally patterned. We applied an Age-Period-Cohort model to identify b...

Assessments of countries’ longevity and its variability around the globe often rely on life expectancy (LE) but tend not to differentiate between the years spent in “good” or “less‐than‐good” health. We explore how the evolution of the healthy and unhealthy components of LE has shaped the composition of LE within countries, and the extent of LE ine...

Background and Objectives Ageism is defined as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination based on age. The present study examined variations in perceived age discrimination in the second half of life. W...

Two important sources of inequality in mortality are regional variation and individuals' socioeconomic status. While many studies have investigated the effect that each of these two factors might have had on mortality levels separately, they have rarely been studied simultaneously. Using linked data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics...

In 1950, life expectancy at birth in Spain was 64.2 years for women and 59.3 years for men. Thereafter and to the present day, this life expectancy has risen practically uninterruptedly to reach, in 2020, 85.1 and 79.6 years, respectively. The case of Spain is not the only one, since the inhabitants of most countries in the world are living to ages...
