Burnishing is a plastic deformation process that reduces roughness while increasing hardness by introducing compressive residual stresses near the surface zone. These improvements will depend mainly on two fundamental variables: the applied load and the friction derived from the tool–surface interaction. Nevertheless, microstructural differences in...
Numerous simplified numerical models have been established to optimize the ball burnishing of steel surfaces. Nevertheless, their conceptualization has not considered the tool – part interaction, leading to an unsatisfactory process parameterization. As a solution, a structured numerical simulation has been defined that reproduces this interaction...
The use of lightweight materials, such as ultra-high-strength aluminium alloys, is in high demand in the automotive and aerospace industries where weight savings are critical. The tool materials used for high-speed cutting of these aluminium alloys are subjected to severe conditions that promote premature failure of cutting tools. The application o...
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the easy manufacturing and quick characterization of several microtextured functional surfaces on two transparent thermoplastics of general interest for several industrial sectors. Microtextured polymeric surfaces with special optical, tribological and easy-cleaning properties were manufactured via isothe...
Smart manufacturing has been in the media for a long time, but the reality shows that traditional mechanical manufacturing industries have not been able to implement data solutions aligned with Industry 4.0 standards. This work inquiries into the possibility of measuring cutting tool vibrations for CNC turning machines and presents the data analysi...
The main goal of this work is to obtain a reliable value of the fracture toughness of single grains of tungsten carbide (WC). It is attempted by testing microcantilever and micropillar samples shaped out, by means of focused ion beam milling, of individual WC particles embedded within a WC-Co cemented carbide grade. Experimental testing included th...
The influence of microstructure on the fracture toughness of two industrially processed 1000 MPa dual-phase (DP) steel grades is investigated. Crack initiation and propagation resistance are evaluated by means of the essential work of fracture (EWF) methodology and the main damage and fracture mechanisms are investigated. The results are discussed...
This paper shows tooling solutions to implement the hot cutting process in press hardening of 22MnB5, considering the tooling performance and the cut edge properties. It is showed that a proper selection of tool materials and cutting parameters give rise to a good tooling performance. In addition, the properties of the hot cut edges are reported an...
In the last years, car bodies are increasingly made with new advanced high-strength steels, for both lightweighting and safety purposes. Among these new steels, high-manganese or TWIP steels exhibit a promising combination of strength and toughness, arising from the austenitic structure, strengthened by C, and from the twinning induced plasticity e...
When indenting a brittle material with a sharp indenter, cracks can be generated at the corners of the imprint. From the length of these cracks, the fracture resistance can be estimated. This technique is simple and allows characterizing small volumes of materials, especially if nanoindentation cube-corners tips are used. For evaluation of fracture...
ABSTRACT
Performance optimization of compaction and calibration tools is a key factor to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of powder metallurgic (PM) processes. In the framework of a collaborative project between AMES, CIEFMA-UPC and CTM (Innpacto oPtiMa), several advanced and non-standardized techniques have been developed for the chara...
In the present work, the friction behaviour of several alternative phosphate-free lubricants applied on wires in industrial drawing conditions has been evaluated. The coefficient of friction of as-applied lubricants is characterized by means of a modified scratch test. Measurements are made directly on lubricated wires, representative of industrial...
In this work, the applicability of the two most commonly used equations for calculating the fracture toughness by nanoindentation is discussed in terms of indenter geometry and indentation crack morphology. These equations are calibrated for Berkovich and cube-corner indenters taking into account the actual indentation crack morphology, in order to...
The mechanical properties, the scratch resistance and the surface damage mechanisms of organic lenses and transparent anti-scratch and antireflective coatings, commonly used in ophthalmic industry, have been studied by means of instrumented nanoindentation and microscratch testing. The effect of the tip microscratch velocity on the mechanical respo...
In this work the hardness, Young modulus and fracture toughness of micro-sized tungsten carbide particles (10-20 μm) embedded in a cobalt matrix (WC-Co cemented carbide) has been evaluated by means of nanoindentation. Hardness and Young modulus of these hard particles have been determined using a Berkovich tip indenter. Fracture toughness has been...
The present work has been conducted in order to determine systematically the influence of the spraying distance on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a Colmonoy 88 alloy deposited by means of HVOF thermal spray onto a SAE 1045 steel substrate. The spray distance varied between 380–470mm and the evaluation of the deposits characteristic...
Crack nucleation mechanisms in two types of cold work tool steels were evaluated under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions. The effect of the microstructural constituents: the primary alloy carbides and the tempered martensite matrix, and their interaction, was identified through fractographic analysis and determination of mechanical properties...
Bulk metallic glass with composition Ti 40 Zr 25 Ni 8 Cu 9 Be 18 exhibits considerably high compressive yield stress, significant plasticity (with a concomitant vein-like fracture morphology) and relatively low density. Yielding and intrinsic plasticity of this alloy are discussed in terms of its thermal and elastic properties. An influence of norm...

3rd Gen AHSS containing transformable retained austenite are excellent candidates for lightweight construction of high crashworthiness automotive parts. This is due to their complex microstructures with moderated retained austenite contents. Stress induced transformation of retained austenite and the matrix characteristics affect both crack initiation and propagation. Crash&Tough aims to investigate and better understand such microstructural effects to optimize crash resistance. It will be assessed through fracture mechanics tests, advanced characterization techniques and FE modelling to understand crack initiation and propagation in 3rd Gen AHSS and optimize their microstructure for high crashworthiness.
