Project
The aim of this project is to analyse the ways in which the intermediate groups (those situated between the popular groups and the nobility) struggled to obtain the right to serve as familiars of the Inquisition, how they capitalised on this distinction in different contexts and to analyse the social profiles manifested by these groups. There are 5 core objectives: 1. To increase the knowledge about the intermediate groups during the Portuguese Ancien Régime; research in Social History has been dominated by the problem of the nobility and elites, both in Portugal and in the rest of Europe, and we will contribute to change the course to lower groups. 2. To investigate in depth one of the most important institutions in society in the Italian and Iberian peninsulas – the Inquisition – in which all social strata played a part. The aim is to study the way in which members of the intermediate groups who served the Inquisition used the organisation for their own ends, rather than investigating the institution itself. 3. To answer the question of how the right to apply for a familiatura could be obtained in Portugal by looking at the different chronological stages. Was a close connection with the General Inquisitor important? Or was a case of venality, as often occurred in other political bodies in the Iberian Peninsula? Was the process conducted on the initiative of the institution itself? 4. To trace the social profile and the action of familiares of the Holy Office, comparing different areas of Portugal and its colonies and also these with Spain and its overseas empire; 5. To continue the work of another project, PTDC/HAH/64160/2006, entitled “In the name of honour: the commissioners for the Holy Office and for the Military Orders in Portugal (1570-1773)”, which is planned to end on 7 th October 2011. The aim is thus, on the one hand, to take advantage of the experience gained from the work carried out by the team; and on the other hand, by tackling a problem which is linked: that of the familiares of the Holy Office - and this work - will helps to complete that of the commissioners.
Project
