Introduction
I work on the trade-offs between social and environmental services in the context of African agriculture, food self-sufficiency and food security. The project takes an interdisciplinary approach which aims to build capacity among UK and African researchers. The research sits at the nexus of three goals of the SDGs-: 2 - food security; 10 - reduced inequality; and 15 - environmental conservation.

This paper examined coping and adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers and their efficacy in response to climate change in Zango and Kofa communities in North-Western Nigeria. Three focus group discussions with 51 participants comprising men, women, and the youth, and 15 follow-up interviews were conducted in this study to understand...

Purpose: Empirical evidence suggests that climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices will promote resilience against climate change. We explored location-specific CSA practices and strategies for adoption in two communities (Zango and Kofa) in the North-Western Nigerian drylands. Design/methodology/approach: Mixed methods design was employed with th...

Dryland smallholders are faced with the challenges of achieving resilience and agricultural sustainability. This is in addition to constraints such as lack of capital, inputs, and often poor extension services. The risk of extreme weather events poses a great challenge to food security in drylands as the impacts of climate change increases. This pa...

Understanding the dynamics of agricultural expansion, their drivers, and interactions is critical for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem-services provision, and the future sustainability of agricultural development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, there is limited understanding of the drivers of agricultural expansion. A systematic review of...

A fourth agricultural revolution, termed agriculture 4.0, is gradually gaining ground around the globe. It encompasses the application of smart technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, the internet of things (IoT), big data, and robotics to improve agriculture and the sustainability of food production. To date, narratives around...

In the modern world, sustainability is crucial to human existence, and it is essential to introduce students to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. This is regarded as a framework that underpins societal challenges and the benefits of addressing them. Moreover, in the domain of chemical engineering education, introducing...

Improvements in crop yields have been a challenge for breeders and biotechnologists as multiple attributes must be considered simultaneously for successful breeding. These attributes include morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular features. In addition, they are closely associated with the photosynthetic efficiency of crops. In rece...

Climate change caused by carbon emissions from anthropogenic causes such as fossil fuel burning, and their impacts have been at the core of policy discourses concerning the transition to a low-carbon economy. As time is ticking towards achieving the 1.5–2° C temperature limit by 2030, businesses have critical roles to play in leading this transitio...

Purpose We conducted a systematic review to explore the potential for the application of blockchain technologies for supply chain resilience in a small-scale agri-food business context. Design/methodology/approach As part of the research methodology, scientific databases such as Web of Science, Google Scholar and Scopus were used to find relevant...

Motivated by the growing attention to climate change and the crucial role businesses could play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this study investigates entrepreneurial energy efficiency orientation in the context of carbon footprint reduction initiatives of small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). We enhance understanding of the climate cha...

Sub-Saharan Africa is facing an expected doubling of human population and tripling of food demand over the next quarter century, posing a range of severe environmental, political, and socio-economic challenges. In some cases, key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are in direct conflict, raising difficult policy and funding decisions, particularl...

The sustainable development of nations globally is highly influenced by the knowledge economy. Growth in the knowledge economy is driven by higher education with quality research being a major contributor to an excellent education. Over the years, universities in high-income countries have put research excellence at the core of their strategies wit...

Improving living standards by enhancing agricultural productivity is mandatory to resolve Nigeria’s socioeconomic problems as more than 50% of the country’s population is dependent on agriculture for a living. Irrigation might offer huge potential in Nigerian agriculture, owing to the country’s vast water resources. This review seeks to provide an...

Scenario analysis allows policymakers to explore and map plausible futures in a systematic manner; yet there are few examples of applying this tool at local scales, thereby missing the detail needed for a better understanding of local processes. In collaboration with local farmers, serious gaming is used to map the impacts of future land cover chan...

This paper examines how smallholder farmers are differentially affected by agricultural expansion in their communities and landscapes. Contributing to the debate on intensification versus expansion, and implications for sustainability, we employ mixed methods research with smallholders in four communities in Ghana and Ethiopia to explore the impact...

Adaptation is important in drylands to enhance the climate change resilience of inhabitants who depend on the environment for their livelihoods. Dryland farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have shown the ability to adapt to a changing climate in the past. However, anthropogenic climate change is leading to a more rapidly changing environment that w...

Scenario analysis is a powerful tool that allows policymakers to explore plausible futures in a systematic manner. This technical briefing describes the process to translate the ‘storylines’ that emerged from a stakeholder workshop in Zambia in 2018, into maps of projected land cover change to 2050.

This policy brief examines the impact of agricultural expansion based on the perceptions of different types of farmer. Over the last four years, the Sentinel project has engaged with stakeholders and communities in the Western and Upper West regions of Ghana to explore how communities interact with natural habitats and to understand perspectives on...

In Ethiopia, a rapidly growing population, widespread poverty, unemployment, low agricultural productivity and a lack of alternative income sources mean that rural people often expand agricultural land into forested areas, leading to loss of ecosystem services. There is an urgent need for policymakers to strike a balance between increasing food pro...

In this policy brief, we highlight what we currently know about the drivers of agricultural expansion in Zambia and their implications for food security, livelihoods and biodiversity conservation. Data was gathered using a suite of rapid-assessment participatory rural appraisal (PRA) tools during fieldwork conducted in 2019 by the Sentinel project...

The question of how to feed Africa’s growing population, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ‘zero hunger’ (SDG 2) by 2030, increasingly incorporates the importance of domestic production for food security. Decision makers tasked with addressing this challenge, will need to develop policies that favour either intensification and/or...

An earlier baseline study (Jellason et al. in preparation) has identified some of the key challenges faced by farmers and from that, appropriate Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) have been selected for the environment the farmers find themselves in and based on a review of available literature. Farmer action plans for enhancing smallholder resilie...

Question
I am using the Theory of Planned behaviour to explore attitude of farmers towards adaptation to climate change, I constructed three variables each to measure attitude, subjective norm and behavioural control. How do I come up with the beta values to test the TPB model after performing a multivariate regression? I have 3 beta values for the 3 measures of attitude, 3 beta values for the 3 measures of subjective norm and 3 beta values for the 3 measures of perceived behavioural control! Should I take the average of the 3 or multiply them or add them to have one beta value each!
Question
A 10, 20 or 30 year period will just be fine. I have got some few maps showing some trends but I need figures to plot some graphs
