The new genus and species Myrmecicultor chihuahuensis Ramírez, Grismado, and Ubick is described and proposed as the type of the new family, Myrmecicultoridae Ramírez, Grismado, and Ubick. The species is ecribellate, with entelegyne genitalia, two tarsal claws, without claw tufts, and the males have a retrolateral palpal tibial apophysis. Some morph...

A taxa richness study of the aquatic insects cohabiting with mosquito larvae in two Belizean river systems was conducted during the summer of 2009. The New River and Sibun River were sampled over a three week period to determine which insect species would be found in association with larval culicids. This study was designed to provide baseline data...

The taxonomic status of two closely related species of Latrodectus, L. mactans and L. hesperus, has been debated for many years. Based on morphological characteristics and genitalia, some workers consider them as valid species and others as subspecies. This study was conducted to determine whether the internal transcribed spacers 2 (ITS2) of rDNA e...

The feral burro (Equus asinus) occurs across much of the rugged landscapes of the western United States. Recent sightings in Brewster and Presidio counties of Trans-Pecos Texas indicate that free-ranging populations are now locally established in parts of the Big Bend region of Texas. A brief historical perspective of E. asinus in the state is prov...

A pitfall trap survey was conducted in Wichita County of north-central Texas for one year. A total of 4072 spiders were collected, representing 22 families. Of the total spiders collected, 62% were mature with males outnumbering the females by a ratio of 4 to 1. The members of the Gnaphosidae were the dominant cursorial spider, consisting of 16.2%...

This study was designed to gain insight into the ''migratory'' life history component of the male brown tarantula, Aphonopelma hentzi (Girard 1854), and to determine if radio telemetry could successfully answer questions regarding the ecology of theraphosids. Tarantulas were equipped with radio transmitters and movement monitored using an antenna a...

Serum samples collected from two geographically distinct populations in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico (Chihuahua City and the Tarahumara Indian village of Bahuinocachic) were tested for human immunodeficiency virus type one (HIV-1) and total hepatitis B core antibodies. Positive rate for hepatitis B antibody was 8.5% and 3.4% in Bahuinocachic and...

A faunal study of the long-horned beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) from the 37 counties comprising N-central Texas produced records of 107 species and subspecies. Represented are 68 genera and 36 tribes from four subfamilies. Natural history observations including information on distribution, seasonal occurrence, and host vegetation are given for...

Green bug, Schizaphts graminum (Rondani), biotypes C and E were used to test mixtures of susceptible and resistant cultivars of wheat, Triticum aestivum L. Three tests were completed in this study. In the first test, two wheat cultivars were used-one susceptible and one resistant to biotype C green bugs. The cultivars were mixed in five ratios rang...

In the first half of this century, several workers observed small, seemingly glandular structures attached to the ampullate glands of spiders. Hence, they were termed accessory ampullate glands. In juvenile Araneus cavaticus, two pairs of these structures are present (starting at least with third instars), one pair attached to the major ampullate (...

North-central Texas includes five counties along the central part of the northern border of Texas. Of the 66 kinds of mammals recorded, 59 are native species and more than a third of these find their eastern or western limits of range in the area. Eastern woodland forms occupy the eastern part of the area, and Great Plains kinds the western. The Re...

Spider prey of 2 mud dauber wasps, Sceliphron caementarium (Drury) and Chalybion californicum (Saussure), was determined in Comanche Co. Oklahoma. Of 747 spiders removed from mud nest constructed by Sceliphron, 93% were either araneids or thomisids. Examination of 446 spiders from nests utilized by Chalybion showed 99.3% of them to be either aranei...

Thirteen families, 34 genera, and 51 species of spiders were collected in guar, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub., in Texas and Oklahoma. Dictyna volucripes Keyserling appeared to be a primary predator of adult midges, Contarinia texana (Felt). Larvae of C. texana were preyed upon by the wolf spider, Pardosa pauxilla Montgomery.

A laboratory study was conducted on the biology of the spider Metaphidippus galathea (Walckenaer). The study determined longevity, mating behavior, fecundity, incubation and hatching, growth and development, and mortality. Sexual dimorphism is marked in M. galathea. Males possess black and white markings whereas the females are marked with shades o...

To create a database of the bacteria found on spiders. We are also determining their antibiotic sensitivity. Once we have sufficient data we can answer questions like: How do the bacteria found on Orb weavers compare to the bacteria found on hunting spiders? Do spiders have MDR bacteria on them? etc.
