The method employed for membrane preparation and nanoparticle incorporation in membrane systems can affect their properties. This work aims to compare the better strategy to obtain membranes from the preparation of PBAT [Poly(butylene adipate co‐terephthalate)] containing nanoclay Cloisite® 20A (C20A) (0, 0.5, and 1 wt.%) by combined Evaporation/No...
Due to high consumption and high demand for polyurethane (PU) foams, they are usually exposed to the environment, suffering the influence and action of weathering. Then, this work investigates the coffee husk residues (CHR) introduction to PU foams obtained from castor oil. A comparative study on the effect of weathering on neat PU foams and CHR-co...
Seawater contamination draws concerns due to its effect on the environment and living beings, where oil spillages are highlighted due to their severe impact. Conventional materials to deal with these problems present non-sustainable nature, and thus, new developments are being performed to develop materials that align sorption properties and higher...
Exposure to potentially toxic metallic elements (PTME) released in watercourses by industries results in irreversible damage to living beings or even death. The removal of a PTME, such as hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in industrial wastewater aligned with the reuse/modification of natural adsorbents, is a promising alternative to remedy this problem...
This study assesses the potential revaluation of solid waste from palm residues for use as reinforcement in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) matrix to develop a composite filament that is more environmentally friendly. Filaments were processed using a thermokinetic mixer and then processed by a mini extruder using different fiber loadings (5,...
Fused deposition modeling (FDM) has been a widely applied technology as one of the most practical tools of additive manufacturing in terms of industry 4.0. Biopolymer filaments obtained by extrusion can be a promising material for scaffold manufacturing by FDM 3D printers. In this work, composite filaments of polyhydroxybutyrate-cohydroxyvalerate (...
This study proposes that green composites using recycled plastic bags (PEr) extruded with pineapple fiber waste (PR) from a juice industry to increase pineapple’s economic value stimulate practices that prioritize recycling and development of new materials. PEr composites were prepared using PR as a filler, using different fiber loadings of 5, 10,...
The search for environmental sustainability has stimulated the construction sector to look for natural materials with an ecological footprint, high strength/weight ratio, and better thermal and mechanical properties. Besides those properties, water absorption studies are necessary to reach these requirements. This research proposes to evaluate chan...
We developed polyurethane foams (PU) filled with eucalyptus charcoal residue (ECR) (5, 10, 20, and 30% by wt) for diesel sorption from seawater. The PU foams were characterized by FTIR, FT-Raman, SEM, density, TGA, contact angle, diesel S500 and S10 sorption, and recyclability. The ECR addition altered PU chemical structure, inducing new chemical b...
Polyurethanes are polymeric materials widely used in all consumer goods and industrial markets. However, their flammability is a serious problem that, associated with the various tragedies that occur annually involving fires, has highlighted the urgent need to reduce the material’s flammability. Flame retardants (FRs) are added to the polymers to i...
The development of new biodegradable composites with superior properties is an attractive approach to develop environmentally friendly materials with new potential applications. In this work, we prepared and characterized PHB filaments with different concentrations of ZnO particles (from 0.5 up to 16 wt%) to evaluate this mixture's effect on the ph...
Macadamia is a nut widely used globally in food, personal hygiene products, and human health. After removing the nut, high amounts of the shell residual, which is an underutilized material with high economic interest. This work presents a sustainable alternative to revalorize the macadamia nutshell residues (MR) developing the green composites. Pol...
This research describes the influence of fiber content from the banana peel waste used as a filler in castor oil polyurethane foam (PU), obtaining eco-sorbent for vegetal oil sorption. Biocomposites were prepared with banana peel waste (BP) in different content: 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt.%, to improve the oil sorption capacity (system PU/BP-oil). Res...
Continuous advances in 3D printing technology, associated with the development of sustainable materials, have driven the manufacture of new biofilaments compatible with numerous applications, such as automotive, robotics, food, and biomedical. In this work, sustainable filaments of PHB and PHBV filled with 5 wt% of Pullulan were prepared, and its c...
In this article, a new approach is applied to reuse Artemisia residue (AR) as filler in polyurethane (PU) foam for vegetable oil sorption for discarded cooking oil applications. The pristine PU and PU/X%AR foams (X stands for AR content of 5–20%wt/wt) were characterized by SEM, density, contact angle (CA), thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier tr...
Oil spill accidents in marine environments and the lack of disposal of post-consumer plastic are environmental problems worldwide. This study presents a sustainable alternative for both issues through envelopes filled with microplastics (MPs) from recycled bags for the sorption of spilled crude oil. Through particle size analysis by three different...
Poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a biodegradable, biocompatible, and non-toxic biopolymer. The biopolymer properties can be improved using cellulosic-based materials, often derived from agro-industrial residues, and promoting reuse/re-significance of a by-product for bone tissue engineering applications. Biocomposites of PHBV fill...
This work prepared eco-friendly biocomposites of polyurethane (PU) and sheath palm residues, using castor oil as a polyol. PU composites filled with natural fibers were prepared at different loading rates: 0 to 20 wt.%. Results indicated that the sheath palm was hydrogen-bonded to PU chains and increased the foams' density. Pore size decreased with...
Polymer nanocomposites are a promising area of research due to quite superior to the conventional composites. However, obtaining a homogeneous distribution of the nanoparticles in the matrix has been a great challenge. Standard processing techniques of nanocomposites are non-practical, requiring longer periods and can affect both mechanical and the...
Crude oil and S500 diesel removal from seawater by polyurethane composites reinforced with palm fiber residues, Chemosphere, https://doi. ABSTRACT 13 In this work, we prepared PU-composites with Australian palm residues (PR) in different 14 contents (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%) and granulometry (28 and 35 mesh) to improve the oil (crude 15 oil and S500...
