Purpose This paper aims to explore UAE's transition towards circular economy (CE) through construction and demolition waste (CDW) management in the pre-construction stage. The extent of circularity is assessed by five key aspects of CE, such as policies and strategic frameworks, design for waste prevention, design for disassembly or deconstruction,...

Background and aim. In this digital era, the facilities management (FM) industry tends to apply Big Data analytics (BDA), employing machine learning for functions such as predictive maintenance, energy management and workplace management. Therefore, it is essential to discuss the digital transformation of facilities management higher education (FMH...

ABSTRACT Background and aim. The rehabilitation of existing buildings is an important response to the sustainability challenge by the built environment sector. Advice from the structural engineer on the ability of an existing structure to facilitate rehabilitation is often hindered by a lack of key information. Guidance is required on the collectio...

The ageing of building stock is taking place in high-rise, high-density cities such as Hong Kong. To handle the ageing building stock problem, redevelopment may not be a sustainable solution, while building rehabilitation has long been neglected. Without timely and proper maintenance, dilapidated buildings are urban time bombs that threaten public...

An applied degree education is about using work-integrated learning approaches in student learning. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has severely affected how applied education may continue to enrich students’ knowledge of the real world. In various degree programs, a simulated environment is an essential part of the curriculum and applying it...
Thesis
The construction industry is frequently criticised for its lacking of innovation. However, researchers have emphasised the limitations of conventional measures, such as profit, number of patents, and R&D allocation, to assess hidden innovation. Hence, a strong need exists for in-depth and non-traditional measurements and insights to analyse innovat...

This study investigates innovation deployment in construction contractor organisations through the lens of exploration and exploitation-learning approaches. Radical vs incremental classification of innovation has been linked with explorative and exploitative learning. Exploration is explained by radical innovation, which is the implementation of in...

Construction industry is often recognised for its lack of innovative nature. In contrast, the necessity of in-depth and non-traditional measurements and insights has been highlighted to analyse the innovation in the industry. Therefore, this paper adopts the concept of exploration and exploitation; two recent learning approaches to explain innovati...

Despite change being a common occurrence in the construction industry, the pace of it is increasingly growing in recent months. Upgrades and updates in computer-based applications suggests that construction organizations are becoming more dependent on new technologies that are changing the construction industry faster than some people can adapt. Re...

The activities specific to the construction industry make it distinct from and more complicated compared to other industries. In construction projects, the tendency for changes is higher during the pre contract and post contract stages. Design changes can occur for several reasons, i.e. involvement of stakeholders in the project and they impact on...
