The aim of this study was to assess changes in mental health, gut microbiota composition, and stress marker serum cortisol due to COVID-19 lockdown in asymptomatic individuals. Healthy adults participated in anthropometric measurements, blood and stool sample collection pre-lockdown and post-lockdown (n = 38, 63.2% females), lifestyle and psycholog...

Helichrysum italicum is an aromatic plant with promising pharmacological activities. Bioactive compounds found in plants represent an important alternative treatment for weight loss and an infusion of H. italicum contains compounds which could have such effect. Our aim was, therefore, to investigate its acute effects on resting energy expenditure (...

Due to limited data about the impact of lockdown on health status, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19-related lockdown on changes in dietary habits, physical activity and serum markers in healthy adults. A total of 38 asymptomatic adults aged from 23 to 59 with a normal BMI (22.5 kg/m2) participated in baseline and post-l...

The new doctoral study Prevention for Health is a modern and innovative study programme in which we aim to develop holistic preventive approaches to the most important public health problems in today's society in Slovenia and around the world. The study combines the fields of kinesiology, nursing, dietetics and physiotherapy in accordance with scie...

Objective A 12-week ketogenic diet was shown to have many beneficial effects in healthy obese adults, but it is not clear if the supply of micronutrients is adequate. Methods In 35 adult individuals with BMI above 30, the intakes of minerals and their serum levels were analyzed at baseline and at weeks 4 and 12 of the ketogenic diet intervention....
Article
The ketogenic diet (KD) is being increasingly promoted as a strategy to fight obesity. Although the KD is effective for weight loss and weight control, comprehensive determination of its relationship with biochemical, physiological and psychological changes is still largely unexplored. We hypothesized that a 12-week KD (12KD) would significantly af...

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to assess the nutritional strategies of Slovenian national junior swimming team and compare them with recommendations of clinical sports nutrition. Competitive young swimmers namely have increased energy and nutrient needs compared to general adolescents due to frequent and intense training. Despite some physio...

Chili and its main active ingredient capsaicin have been shown to induce several favorable biological activities. In the present study we have tested the effect of three chili sauces mimicking popular commercially available chili sauces with an increasing amount of capsaicinoids on a broad range of serum biochemical markers in thirty healthy subjec...

Objective We aimed at comparing markers of bone metabolism during unloading in young and older men, and to assess countermeasure effectiveness. Methods 16 older (60±2 years) and 8 younger men (23±3 years) underwent bed rest (BR) for 14 days. A subgroup of the Older performed cognitive training during BR and supplemented protein and potassium bicar...
Article
Objective: Coffee consumption is negatively associated with risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular mortality. Coffee roasting can greatly modify the quality-quantitative characteristics of bioactive compounds. We compared the effects of two different roasting intensities of the same naturally low-caffeine Arabica coffee variety (Laurina) on gl...

Ageing and inactivity both contribute to systemic inflammation, but the effects of inactivity on inflammation in healthy elderly individuals have not been elucidated. We hypothesised that 14-day bed rest could affect the pro- and anti-inflammatory markers in young subjects differently than in older adults. A short-term 14-day horizontal bed rest st...

As there is effective intervention for delaying or preventing metabolic diseases, which are often present for years before becoming clinically apparent, novel biomarkers that would mark metabolic complications before the onset of metabolic disease should be identified. We investigated the role of fasting serum amino acids and their associations wit...
Article
Adiponectin has anti--inflammatory, anti--atherosclerotic properties and it is involved in metabolic regulation, especially by sensitizing tissues for insulin. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet has been shown to have a positive effect on adiponectin levels. Therefore, our aim was to assess asymptomatic general population of the Mediterranean part...

It is well known that immobilization, through reduction of musculoskeletal forces, leads to bone loss. This is well established for clinical conditions, such as stroke, spinal cord injury as well as for spaceflight and disuse models, such as experimental bed rest. Age is another condition that predisposes to bone loss, which is intimately linked to...

The study aimed to characterize curcumin (CCM) (fluorescent yellow curry pigment) labeling of neuronal fibrillar tau inclusions (FTIs) in representative cases of 3 main tauopathies: Alzheimer disease (AD), progressive supranuclear palsy, and Pick disease. After identification of FTIs in hematoxylin and eosin-stained brain sections, sequential label...

Background: Curcumin, a natural fl uorochrome and a potent anti-infl ammatory antioxidant used as a spice and as an ayurvedic remedy for centuries, has been shown to label pathologic aggregates of beta amyloid, alphasynuclein and scrapie prion protein, and to reduce their aggregation. Curcumin binding to tau, a protein that pathologically aggregate...

Although Hoechst 33342 (H342) is frequently used to label donor cells in cell transplantation research, it has been noted that it might secondarily label the host cells. Furthermore, its potential toxicity leading to cell death has been described. We studied the time course of H342 redistribution from the primary labeled rat bone marrow stromal cel...

Our goal was to determine safety and health effects of 12-week ketogenic diet in obese. The aim of the study was a comprehensive determination of quality of body mass loss, metabolic states changes, physical and psychological performance changes, appetite, and inflammatory and hormones profile changes during and post a 12-week low energy ketogenic diet intervention.
