Background Monkeypox virus person-to-person transmission mostly occurs by personal contact with an infected individual or surface. We used the classical susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) epidemic model (Figure 1) to forecast the virus spread in a simulated population. Diagram of the SIR epidemic model Methods SIR model equations (ds/dt = −βsi;...

Background: An increase in the prevalence of microcephaly (MCP) was observed in Rio Grande do Norte State (RN) beginning in September 2015. This Brazilian Northeast state was highly impacted by a Zika vírus (ZIKV) outbreak over the subsequent two years. The highest rate of MCP was measured in November 2015, at 20.1 cases per 1,000 live births, comp...

Background Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) has a broad spectrum of clinical presentations that are still being described. This cohort study aimed to describe the orthopedic complications in children with microcephaly (MCP) related to Zika virus (ZIKV). Methods We evaluated 36 children with CZS up to 17 months of age followed at a pediatric rehabili...

Background Infant mortality in Brazil has increased for the first time in 26 years. This study aimed to define the Zika Syndrome (ZS) perinatal case fatality rate (PCF) since the 2015 Zika outbreak in a Brazilian northeast state highly impacted by the virus. Methods Cross-sectional study conducted using data obtained through the State Health Depar...

Hypothalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been used for more than a decade to treat cluster headache (CH) but its mechanisms remain poorly understood. The authors have successfully treated a patient with CH using hypothalamic DBS and found that the contact used for chronic stimulation was located in a white matter region posterior to the mammil...

Background Many studies have demonstrated a causal link between Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, microcephaly (MCP) and other congenital abnormalities (CA). This study aimed to determine the perinatal case fatality rate in cases of Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) in the Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), a Brazilian Northeast State highly impacted by the Z...

Background Preexisting DENV antibodies may have a cross-reactivity against ZIKV. A recent primate study suggested that prior DENV infection does not adversely impact subsequent ZIKV disease and might be protective. This study aimed to evaluate the relation between a Dengue Fever (DF) outbreak in 2016 and the prevalence of ZIKV infection in Rio Gran...

Background Although Zika virus (ZIKV) infection causes a broad-spectrum of congenital neurological disorders, radiographic correlates of clinical outcome are lacking. During 2015–2016 ZIKV outbreak we faced a high incidence of microcephaly (MCP) in Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), located in northeast of Brazil. Among all regions, the northeast was...

Background Studies have demonstrated radiological findings in microcephaly (MCP) related to Zika virus (ZIKV). The 2015–2016 ZIKV epidemic leaded to an increase in the prevalence of MCP in the northeast region of Brazil. Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), a Brazilian northeast state, was highly impacted by this outbreak. This study aimed to evaluate C...

INTRODUCTION Studies using functional MRI showed the ipsilateral posterior hypothalamus activation during the cluster headache episodes. The deep brain stimulation of the posterior hypothalamic (DBS-PH) area was introduced in 2000 in order to treat drug-resistant chronic cluster headache (CCH). METHODS Systematic Research using databases including...

Objective: To assess the efficacy of Percutaneous Balloon Compression (PBC) and to evaluate the factors influencing the outcome. Background: PBC is a therapeutic option available to treat Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN). TN is one of the most painful conditions known. Design/Methods We performed a retrospective study on 222 patient’s records which have...

Background Pertussis, also called whooping cough, is an acute infectious disease of high transmissibility transmitted through aerosol particles released during the catarrhal phase and paroxysmal cough. Since the 1990s its incidence has increased and atypical clinical forms have been identified, mainly in newborns and adults. We hypothesized that th...
