To eliminate plastic pollution, a holistic approach is needed
This independent research paper was prepared for the 2016 ECOSOC Partnership Forum, commissioned by the UNDESA Office for ECOSOC Support and Coordination. A draft version was discussed during an Expert Group Meeting in February 2016.
The recent General Assembly resolution under the agenda item entitled “Towards global partnerships” requests the EC...
Marine plastic pollution is a fast growing problem. In 2017, 335 million metric tons (Mt) of plastics were produced, and this number is projected to increase almost fourfold to 1,100 Mt by 2050. We know that about 8,300 Mt of plastic has been produced up until this point, of which only 9% have been recycled and 12% have been incinerated. The remain...
The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) entails 46 objectives in five categories. Implementation is assessed through 20 indicators, yet these are incapable of tracking progress and in urgent need of renewal. The intersessional process on SAICM and the sound management of chemicals and waste (SMCW) beyond 2020 provides a...
In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations assigned an important role to multistakeholder partnerships for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. Since partnerships show a mixed success record, this article analyzes whether relevant actors in the UN context are inclined to translate lessons learned and the increased...
This discussion paper summarises gaps in the governance of marine plastic pollution and proposes key functions of a new legally binding international agreement. The global governance of plastics is “characterized by fragmented authority, weak international institutions, uneven regulations, uncoordinated policies, and business-oriented solutions.” (...
Plastic pollution is a serious and rapidly growing environmental and health problem that will stay with us for centuries. The current governance landscape is fragmented and leaves gaps so large that up to 13 million tonnes of plastic enter the oceans every year. On land and in the ocean, plastic waste causes considerable damage. None of the existin...
Global plastic production is continuously increasing and reached 322 million tonnes
in 2015, generating revenues for plastic manufacturers of about US$ 750 billion.
However, adequate waste collection systems are lacking in many countries. As a con-
sequence, discarded plastic often ends up in the environment, where it can cause
health and other...
How should the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) develop beyond 2020? This was the guiding question in a series of nearly 40 interviews with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders from developed and developing countries. The interviews focused on stakeholders’ perception on the strengths and weaknesses of the...
In the context of negotiations on the Post-2015 or 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the process of formulating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations (UN) (again) assigns an important role to multi-stakeholder partnerships. But how do actors view these partnerships more than ten years after the UN’s engagement with them...
