Introduction
As a scientist, Nils Riach teaches at the University of Freiburg on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the systematic analysis of diverse spatial phenomena. His research focuses on climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptive capacity of natural and human systems. He supports the applied research of the Transportation Think Tank T3 by collecting, analysing and visualising (geo)data at the nexus of climate, mobility and societal change.

Municipalities are often challenged in adapting to climate change impacts, with knowledge gaps regarding climate risks being an important constraint hindering the development and implementation of adaption strategies. Although at the municipal level, risks are highly context specific, recurring patterns of hazard, exposure and vulnerability can oft...
The Trinational Metropolitan Region Upper Rhine (TMO3) is a polycentric and highly urbanized region in Central Europe. The impacts of climate change onto the regional enterprises are complex and differ sectorwise and according to geographical factors. In this paper, we take a differentiated look at climate change impacts and adaptation efforts in n...
Tickborne-encephalitis (TBE) is a potentially life-threating neurological disease that is mainly transmitted by ticks. The goal of the present study is to analyze the potential uniform environmental patterns of the identified TBEV microfoci in Germany. The results are used to calculate probabilities for the present distribution of TBEV microfoci in...
Cars overtaking cyclists have been identified as a source of crashes and subjective risk. Several studies investigated the passing distance for different road types. There has been less research concerning cyclists’ expectations concerning the passing distance at different road types. Thus, we aim at contrasting cyclists’ expectations about the pas...
In this study we examine the spatial patterns of risk towards climate change and climatic extremes in the “Trinational Metropolitan Region Upper Rhine” (TMU). Following the concept of risk analysis, we identify the regional dimension of climatic stressors in relation to the socio-economic dimension. We present an indicator-based assessment, which o...
Parking fees and fines represent contested issues in cities, as they conflict with vehicle owners' opinion over ‘rights’ to public space. As cities have moved to regulate vehicle density by introducing parking fees, a share of drivers may feel compelled to ‘cheat’, weighing the price of parking fees against the cost of fines, or to simply park ille...

Information on individual hazard perception while cycling and the associated feeling of safety are key aspects to foster sustainable urban cycling mobility. Although cyclist’s perceptions must also be critically reviewed, such crowdsourced Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) provides wide-ranging insights on diverse hazard categories in cyclin...
Climate vulnerability assessments are an important prerequisite for establishing successful climate adaptation strategies. Despite a growing number of assessments on the national or global scale, there is still a need for regionalized studies with a high resolution to identify meso-scale vulnerability patterns. In this paper, we present an indicato...
