Kayseri Üniversitesi olarak, ATA tohumlarının yetiştirilmesi, yaygınlaştırılması ve muhafazası adına pilot üretim çalışmaları her yıl düzenli olarak gerçekleştirilmektedir. Özellikle bazı ATA tohumlarının yaygınlaştırılmasının sağlanması amacıyla, yerel yönetimlerle yapılan iş birlikleri mevcut tohumların katma değerini artırıp fide haline getirilerek üreticilere ulaştırılması sağlanmıştır. Ayrıca üretilen fidelerden elde edilen ürünlerin tohum yenilenmesi çalışmaları da yapılarak her yıl yerel tohum yetiştiriciliğinin sürdürülebilirliği sağlanmıştır. Bununla birlikte tohum yenileme çalışması amacıyla fidelerin yetiştirilmesinden elde edilen ürünler doğrudan tüketiciyle buluşması sağlanmıştır. Ancak, her geçen gün ATA tohumlarının kaybolma tehlikesi ile yüz yüze kalması konunun pilot düzeyde yapılacak uygulamaların yanı sıra, profesyonel düzeye taşınmasının gerekliliğini ortaya çıkarmıştır. Mevcut durum karşısında, üniversitemiz tarafından gerçekleştirilen üretim faaliyetleri ile elde edilen fide ve tohum miktarları talebi karşılayamamaktadır. Bu nedenle, bu proje kapsamında Kayseri Üniversitemiz bünyesinde kurulacak olan ATA Tohumu Araştırma, Uygulama ve Fide Üretim Merkezinde yerli sebze tohumlarının araştırılması, katma değeri yüksek ürünlere dönüştürülmesi, üretiminin artırılması ve/veya ATA tohumlarının kullanımının yaygınlaştırılmasının önü açılmış olacaktır.
