A significant amount of existing research has dealt with the negative effects of music on people's behavior, but only a few studies have shown that music with prosocial lyrics can increase prosocial behavior. This study focuses on the positive effects of music with prosocial lyrics on people in an everyday setting. Based on the general learning mod...

Many content analyses have investigated the content of popular music, but as yet no one has looked for references to prosocial behavior in the lyrics. There are no quantitative content analyses of prosocial content in popular music, although we know that many musicians are concerned with social engagement, the environment, equal rights, and many ot...

Popular music with prosocial lyrics affects listeners’ thoughts, emotions and behavior, yet little is known about the role played by the actual music in this process. Although making music is a popular leisure activity for children and adolescents, few stay musically engaged. Previous research has focused on finding reasons for quitting musical activities, pedagogical strategies to keep students engaged with music, and motivational factors of musical training. Nonetheless, we know very little about how the propo...

Many people used musical media via music streaming service providers to cope with the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic. Accounting for such behavior from the perspective of uses-and-gratifications theory and situated cognition yields reliable explanations regarding people’s active and goal-oriented use of musical media. We accessed Spotify’s da...

It is widely believed that someone’s personality can be assessed through their musical taste. There are many theoretical approaches that explain why this could be true, and a long tradition of research has investigated the associations between personality and musical preferences, but empirical evidence regarding these correlations shows inconsisten...

In 2018, people in Germany listened to more music via digital than physical media for the first time. Still, many musicians are not convinced by music streaming services like Spotify. It seems that they do not see that music streaming is a sustainable concept which can be more profitable than selling CDs. In the last years, the technology acceptanc...

Mentions of commercial products are common in hip hop and R&B lyrics, relative to other genres of popular music, although the potential impacts of this are not well-understood. Since these songs reach millions of people daily, it is pertinent to study the nature of these product mentions-in turn facilitating further research on their effects. In or...

Wenn wir Songs wie „People Help the People“, „Heal The World“ oder „Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?“ hören, lösen diese etwas bei uns aus.

Many musicians deliver prosocial messages in their music and engage in charity events, but we know very little about how our reception of this music affects us. Following the General Learning Model by Buckley and Anderson, one possible explanation could be that the music affects us because we know about the engagement and the intentions of the musi...

The concept of flow illustrates how correctly balancing the challenge of a task and the skill of the person engaged in that task can lead to a mental state that is perceived as particularly fulfilling. It is of fundamental importance for radio broadcasting companies that their listeners do not turn off the radio or switch to another station. Audiences continue listening if they like the program – especially the music. This positive appraisal can be explained by the concept of flow (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975), which illustrates how the right balance...

From an economic perspective, listeners are the most important factor in success for a radio station. The main goal for any Adult Contemporary (AC) or Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) broadcasting company is therefore to get people to listen to their program, and then not to switch to another station or turn off the radio. When people enjoy a radio pro...

But little do we know of good issues and especially norms and/or values transported through popular music. Be...

If we think about a musical person, we could assume that the person must be introverted because he or she has to practice a lot on their own, but we could also assume that the person must be extroverted because she or he has to perform on stage. My research question therefore is: How is the development of musical abilities associated with personality? And is it our personality that leads to musical abilities or is it the other way around?
Project
Why do we like music streaming services, what MSS features enhance our music listening experience, and how does this affect the consumption of other music media? This project aims to answer these questions with studies from the fields of music psychology, technology acceptance, and music industry research.
Archived project
This is my dissertation project in which I focus on: 1. The representation of prosocial music (music about helping, spending, social/ecological engagement) in various charts. 2. Effects of prosocial music on listeners.
