Up-to-date manufacturing engineering is characterized by multiproduct manufacturing of produced parts. Increasing of the parts complexity requires complication of design work for tooling and fixtures manufacturing. It leads to raising the prime cost of finished products. Tooling and fixtures play the significant role for ensuring the competitive product manufacturing. They are an integral part of the closed-loop technological system “machine tool – fixture – cutting tool – workpiece”. The Special Session is focused on a broad range of research challenges, addressing current and future trends in: (1) design approaches using virtual prototyping (CAD/CAE) for cutting tools, auxiliary tools and fixtures for machining, assembly, welding, and measurement, as well as design of innovative fixturing solutions for multiaxis machining; (2) optimization methods based on numerical simulation and experimental studies of mechanical systems, e.g. “fixture – workpiece”; and (3) verification techniques, including CAx technologies (computer-aided fixture design, computer-aided tooling) and VR/AR applications.
