Glyptostrobus pensilis (Cupressaceae) is the only surviving species of the genus Glyptostrobus . Although the species is widely cultivated throughout China, in the wild it only occurs as small stands in southeastern China, central Laos, and southern Vietnam. However, its low genetic variability, lack of recruitment, and the progressive destruction...
Centaurea subsection Phalolepis has been thoroughly analyzed in previous studies using microsatellites in four centers of speciation: Anatolia, Greece, the Italian Peninsula and the Iberian Peninsula. Evidence suggests a correlation between taxon diversity and mountains. This group constituted a good case study for examining the mountain–geobiodive...
Identifying and protecting refugia is a priority for conservation management under projected anthropogenic climate change. We have two main objectives: the first is to explore the spatial (East Asia) and temporal (Last Glacial Maximum to year 2070) distribution patterns of dominant Castanopsis species of evergreen broad-leaved forests, also the rel...
The genus Kalanchoe, mostly indigenous from Madagascar and Tropical Africa, is widely traded for ornamental value. In this study, we provided an updated list of wild and cultivated Kalanchoe taxa in Ecuador; we analyzed the temporal–spatial pattern of their records, and we categorized the invasion status for each taxon and its environment preferenc...
Font Quer (Lérida 1888 – Barcelona 1964), was an illustrious Catalan botanist who carried out important research on the flora of northern Morocco, which at the beginning of the 20th century was scarcely studied. He organized self-financed collection campaigns called Iter Maroccanum carried out between 1927 and 1932, where he registered more than 2,...
The BC herbarium houses the second largest botanical collection of plants in Spain including about 800,000 specimens and 10,000 types. It also conserves one of the most important collections of North African vascular plants, particularly from the Maghreb floristic area (i.e. Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia).
The North African plants collection started...
Climate changes are top biodiversity shapers, both during the past and future. Mapping the most climatic stable and unstable zones on Earth could improve our understanding of biodiversity distribution and evolution. Here, we present a set of maps based on a global scale, high resolution (ca. 5 km) new Climate Stability Index (CSI). The CSI consider...
Carlos Pau was one of the first Spanish botanists interested in the flora of northern Morocco. He proposed 421 taxa for this area, including some illegitimate names and nomina nuda. A complete and annotated catalogue of names by Pau for Moroccan taxa is presented here. For all of them, the typification and synonymy have been evaluated. For 63 taxa...

The names in Amaranthus described by Frère Sennen from Spain were studied and, when necessary, typified. Seventeen lectotypes, preserved in BC and MA herbaria, have been designated. Isolectotypes were traced at BCN, herb. Sennen II, JE, JBAG (herb. Laínz), K, MA, P, and PH.
Petrocoptis montsicciana and P. pardoi are two Iberian endemic taxa of Caryophyllaceae family with an unclear taxonomic delimitation, being variously treated as independent species, subspecies or even synonyms. In the present study, allozyme raw data obtained in the early 2000s have been reused with improved tools to survey genetic structure, and c...
Invasive alien species are currently considered one of the main threats to global biodiversity. One of the most rapidly expanding invasive plants in recent times is Kalanchoe × houghtonii (Crassulaceae), an artificial hybrid created in the 1930s in the United States by experimental crossings between K. daigremontiana and K. tubiflora, two species e...
Challenges in the collection of vouchers, either because of the physical properties of the material (species difficult to collect or to press, e.g., palms, cycads, toxic plants, and cacti) or because drying may have a negative effect on taxonomic characters (e.g., colour), recommend the use of photographs to complement herbarium specimens. In a ser...
One of the topics currently under discussion in biological invasions is whether the species’ climatic niche has been conserved or, alternatively, has diverged during invasions. Here, we explore niche dynamic processes using the complex invasion history model of Lilium lancifolium, which is the first tested case of a native species (Korea) with two...
We provide the first records of five non-native vascular plants for Europe—Commelina erecta, Cylindropuntia fulgida, Dasylirion serratifolium, xGraptosedum and Senecio crassissimus, two for the Iberian Peninsula—Lobelia laxiflora subsp. angustifolia and Pennisetum flaccidum, and four for Catalonia— Dimorphotheca fruticosa, xGasteraloe beguinii, Opu...

As part of a taxonomic study in Gnaphalieae and other Compositae, 45 new lectotypes, 1 epitype and 3 neotypes are designated for names in Phagnalon, Conyza and Pluchea. Typifications are discussed, together with taxonomic notes on these taxa and references to previous lectotypifications. The accepted names for which we propose lectotypifications ar...
The vascular plant names proposed by Carlos Pau from Morocco between 1908 and 1922 were studied and, when necessary and possible, typified. Nine lectotypes for Pau names plus one for a synonym have been designated; most of them preserved in MA and BC herbaria (isolectotypes at BCN, G, LD, and P).
Herbarium collections constitute permanent and often well-documented records of the distribution of taxa through space and time. Since their creation, their uses have dramatically expanded and with many new uses being proposed, including some for which herbaria were not initially intended for. In this paper we assess the
potential of these collecti...
Ethnobotany takes into account past uses to be projected into the present and future. Most current ethnobotanical research is focused, especially in industrialised countries, on obtaining information of plant uses from elderly people. Historical ethnobotany is less cultivated, although papers have demonstrated its interest. Particularly poor, but p...

This method is also used t...
Projects
Projects (2)
This project revolves around the aim of the MCNB and IBB collection departments to digitalize its collections and make them freely available online. Our main goal is to improve awareness of our collections via projects that include a description of all our collections, the creation of new collections, improving the accessibility of databases, and the publication of images.
Our goal is to study the medium and long-term effects of certain environmental factors on the specimens in our collections and on their storage materials as a means of finding ways of mitigating possible damage.
We also aim to study the medium and long-term effects of the materials and techniques we use for remedial conservation, as well as the impact that storage materials and facilities and sustainable conservation may have on our natural sciences collections.
