Introduction
Historic buildings that embraced centuries of circular economy knowledge are now forced to adopt "energy efficiency" measures devised for new constructions, and to achieve goals they were never designed to provide or endure. Revised notions of circular economy are required to “ICT–tune” Traditional Knowledge and renewable energies towards improved (energy) performance and Quality of Life. We need measurable results that people embrace, and reproduce, as their own.

To meet the targets for a Low Carbon Economy in 2050, all new and existing buildings will have to significantly reduce their energy consumption, and/or progressively transition towards low carbon energy supplies.
Although the EPBD-" recast " has set targets for new buildings and future definition of " cost effective thresholds " for existing ones,...
Historic Centres are privileged locations of our cities, the living legacy of centuries of evolution and innovation. As Climate Change mitigation and energy security issues demand for Energy Efficiency, many ancient buildings are either excluded from the common effort, or pushed towards “deep renovation” goals they were never designed to provide or...
Ancient buildings are examples of resilience and versatility, and their capability to persist throughout the centuries should be appreciated as a symbol of sustainability. However, the public perceives existing buildings as uncomfortable and unhealthy energy hogs, which they can easily become without proper use, " rehabilitation " or maintenance. T...
European historic city centres embrace a high percentage of masonry buildings with varying materials and configurations, and successive layers of constructive practices.
As “deep energy renovations” are progressively imposed in city centres across Europe, structural uncertainty often justifies interior demolitions and the construction of new build...
Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), a "one size fits all" comparison initially designed to know more about European buildings, suddenly became a prescriptive energy efficiency strategy/funding metric and a "shadow" European Norm. To favour European buildings' comparability centuries of local empiric knowledge are ignored towards "linear cycle"...
This case study describes the results of the ongoing Ph.D thesis on “Upgrade Opportunities for Ancient Buildings" that aims to demonstrate innovative ways to reach “nearly Zero Energy Buildings” levels by reinterpreting the traditional knowledge concerning historic buildings. The case study focuses on synergies that can be usefully employed when th...
Neighbourhoods are the collective reality in which urban buildings evolved for centuries, the reason for their diversity and versatility, and the key to their perseverance. Nonetheless successive European investigations and legislation favour individualistic approaches targeting only at salvageable Watts estimations, facilitating theoretical and le...

The opportunity to read papers before they are presented facilitates a timely choice of the topics we want to learn more about. Congratulations to the SDBE 2017 team for the early delivery of the proceedings.

Ancient buildings are magnificent examples of resilience and versatility, and their capability to exist throughout the centuries should be appreciated as a symbol of sustainability. However, the public perceives ancient buildings as uncomfortable and unhealthy energy hogs, which they can easily become without proper use, “rehabilitation...
This article focuses on the historical background which lead to the implementation of an EUA programme in a European country; a programme designed for developing countries. To that end, we seek to discern, how 1980’s Managing Energy and Resource Efficient Cities (MEREC) methodology has perpetuated in urban planning and architecture practice as well...

Submited paper and presentation will be available after the session's rapporteurs conclude their task.
A successful roadmap for the resilience and eco-efficiency improvement of existing buildings and cities must engage in the journey a large number of stakeholders, a larger task than drawing a path to a destination. To achieve this goal it is necessary to evaluate what has been done and why, to identify the expectations of those curious about this j...

Energy concept:
This project assumes that well designed and constructed buildings were able to provide comfort to their users in a time when fossil fuels were not easily available. " Learning from Traditional Knowledge towards Engaged Inhabiting " (Brito et al., 2014), it is proposed that users and buildings are teams that must interact to better...
The authors present a summary of recent developments and ongoing work at ADAI's Energy, Environment and Comfort research group, in the areas of Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Indoor Environmental Quality.
All comments welcomed as it is going for publishing soon. The idea is that normal building owners are able to understand the underlying concepts and some generic results: to create an urge to ask for more.
The increasing concerns on Climate Change and Energy Security are forcing ancient buildings to undergo rehabilitations to achieve goals they were never designed to provide or endure. State-of-the-art tools and "hard science" approaches to ancient buildings favor the quality and viability of ancient buildings upgrade, allowing them to lead on contem...
Context The update of the built environment to the contemporary needs and desires is a recurrent phenomenon in the relationship between humans and the space they inhabit, a transformative action that produces our collective memory. The buildings in our historic centers are both mirrors and records of this process, incorporating centuries of innovat...
Climate changes are evidentall over the planet and it is no longer possible to ignore its relationship with the carbon emissions, deeply related to energy production and use. To tackle this problem different measures are being taken worldwide to promote energy efficiency and expand the use of renewable energy sources in all areas and particularly i...
Using an existing case study, it is shown that the instruments to depict and intertwine flows that translate, visualize and preview the implications of a given action, product or service on the other flows—and on the users’ response and evolving expectations—are already available, although disperse and expensive.
This paper argues that measurable...
Although a great majority of solar thermal systems is designed for new construction, assuming insulated boundaries and efficient acclimatization systems, the achievement of the Energy Performance for Buildings Directive goals is highly dependent of retrofitting actions in the existing buildings, 98% of the built area.
In fact existing buildings in...
This paper demonstrates the use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and automatic digital photogrammetric (ADP) tools to depict shapes and deformations, to dynamically perceive the spatial patterns of building deformations and to quantify those deformations in the built structure.
Three case studies will be presented: i) The Arch of Rua Augusta, a...
This proposal focuses on the potential of the existing buildings upgrade process in achieving the 20-20-20 goals, as these are the biggest energy consumers, the most significant built area and the better placed buildings within our cities.
These buildings frequently lack basic maintenance and need intervention, but include within themselves a vast...
The urge to subdue the surrounding environment to the needs and expectations of the contemporary times is a recurrent phenomenon in the relation between humans and their inhabited space, a cultural process that reorganizes energy in the shape of matter and information (Fernández-Galiano, 1998). The inability to adequately correspond to the needs an...
The themes of climate change, energy scarcity and energy security motivated an overwhelming interest in new efficient buildings and, in a secondary level, in adapting these emerging goals into the existing stock. City centers were, are and will (probably) be crossroads of people, information and goods, as well as references for those who live, trad...
