Rice yield increased 2.7 ton/ha in 1927 to more than 5 ton/ha in 1999. But some farmers can get more than 10 ton/ha paddy yield. Thus, we can say that there is potential to increase rice paddy yield more than 10 ton/ ha in near future. Improvement in soil preparation, planting methods, irrigation, rice cultivars, fertiliser application, plant prote...

The sunflower is originated to America and consists of 37 perennials and 14 annual species. Wild sunflower (Helianthus spp) species have many gene sources that are resistant to biotic and abiotic stress conditions, and it is of great importance to ensure continuous resistance to the transfer of these resistant genes to the cultural type sunflower. In this project, all of the wild sunflower species obtained from the US Department of Agriculture and other genera (Echinacea purpurea, Verbesina encelioides, Tithonia rotundifolia), which are closer to Helianthus genus will be determined by Flow Cytometry method at Namik Kemal University. Additionally, this wild species will be test against to broomrape parasite in both Bulgaria and in Turkey collected new races of broomrape as the biggest problems in sunflower in both countries. Besides, fatty acid compositions of all these genetic materials will be determined largely in Trakya University laboratories for the first time in the world. As a result of these tests, higher oleic acid and resistant wild species to broomrape will be crossed with cultured type, and those obtained with F1 and F2 in following years will be screened with molecular markers in terms of both high oleic acid and their resistance to broomrape parasite in Trakya Universiy lab. Eventually, Trakya University and Namik Kemal University in Turkey side, and the Sofia Genetics and Physiology Institute in Bulgaria side will share their knowledge and experience on sunflower and some issues will be held as extensive as first time in the world as joint study in in the project.

Agroheritage comprises local plant varieties and animal breeds, traditional agricultural techniques, uses and related knowledge collectively developed by farmers through ages. Although survival of these agroheritage elements safeguard the sustainability of agriculture by providing diversity and buffering diseases and climate extremes; instensive farming has resulted in loss of traditional seeds, animals and knowledge day by day. The objective of our Project is to introduce agroheritage concepts into higher education agenda as a comprehensive course curriculum with free online learning material supported by practical trainings to agricultural students. The ultimate aim is to raise the awareness and capacity of future agriculturists to lead farmers by being innovative, creative and cooperative in utilizing and conserving agroheritage.
