To realize simple and low-cost VCSEL-based parallel-optical modules mounted onto a polymer-waveguide-embedded PCB in high density, we propose a new mounting technology using a guide pin-assisted optical coupling stabilization during a Sn-Ag-Cu solder -- reflow process. The guide holes of the 12-channel optical module and the guide pins of optical P...
The capability of mounting a parallel-optical module onto a PCB through solder-reflow process contributes to reduce the number of piece parts, simplify its assembly process, and minimize a foot print for both AOC and on-board applications. We introduce solder-reflow-capable parallel-optical modules employing 1060-nm InGaAs/GaAs VCSEL which leads to...
We introduce solder reflow-capable high-density parallel-optical modules for >100 Gb/s optical interconnects. Polymer-waveguide-coupled parallel-optical modules are also introduced with a unique mounting technology. 1060-nm 28-Gb/s InGaAs/GaAs VCSEL realizes a good signal quality at high temperature and error free for MMF transmission beyond 500m.
We demonstrate a novel architecture of mounting parallel-optical modules (POMs) onto an optical printed circuit board (PCB) through Sn-Ag-Cu-solder reflow process where precisely positioned stud-pins on optical PCB and guide holes formed on POMs were mated to maintain good optical coupling. We confirmed that fabricated 14-Gb/s × 12-channel POMs ach...
48-fiber thermoplastic MT ferrule is developed. The fiber hole position error is below 2.5 μm and the insertion loss is below 0.5 dB. The ferrule is cost effective compared with conventional thermosetting ferrule.
As the performance limits of electrical transmission become apparent In such equipment as servers and routers, optical interconnection technology is drawing attention. Furukawa Electric has been developing, In anticipation of application to optical interconnection, optical high-density multi-fiber connectors. In this paper, compact multifiber ferru...
Electric transmission in a system and in such equipment as a high-speed server, a router, and an LSI, tester is reaching its limit, and introduction of optical transmission is considered. We are developing the OptoUnity products as an effort in providing the optical inter-connectlon technology that realizes high-speed transmission and a high densit...
Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services have achieved wide penetration in recent years, and seem likely to grow even faster in the future. Thus, in the process of servicing subscribers' homes with fiber to provide optical internet access, there is a growing need for shorter work times and lowering requirement for expertise in installation personnel. Spec...
We have developed new field installable connector which is directly attachable to optical fiber wires. The developed connector consists of two types; plug type and socket type, and employs brand new connecting interface suitable for small space placement. We also aimed to improve connector assemblability for easy, quick and sure connection. We exam...
The capacity of optical communications networks has increased rapidly in the past several years with the introduction of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, and optical power in the optical fiber link has risen accordingly. However, when optical power rises, system reliability suffers, with problems like damage to the fiber or optica...
We investigated the high power problems in optical fiber link. We experimentally show the correlation between the threshold power of a fiber fuse and mode field diameter of the fiber. And we also show the differences of high power durability in various fiber coatings.
Some high power problems in optical fiber are paid attention to, accompanying the increase of operating optical power. Especially, this paper reports experimental data gathered on three problems stated as follows. The first problem is the destruction of fiber endface, and short-term 2W exposure tests of mated FC connector pairs prepared with variou...
