Introduction
I'm a physical oceanographer, driven to improve our understanding of climate change effects in the ocean. Currently, my research is largely focused on how the changing Southern Ocean eventually impacts the global thermohaline circulation as well as the stabilizing ice shelves that surround the Antarctic Ice Sheet. One of my goals is to go beyond traditional observational efforts and to contribute to efficient usage of autonomous instruments under ice.

Successive CTD profiles of an Argo float trapped within a deep (~1250 m) sub-basin of the North Aegean Sea during 2014–2015 enabled identification of deep-water ventilation episodes and inference of a bulk (budget-based) vertical eddy diffusivity during the period that followed these events. Independent effective eddy diffusivity profiles were com...

The Mediterranean Sea is one of the first regions where sea surface temperature (SST) increase was linked to greenhouse effects and global warming. Due to its sensitivity to climate variability and its high impact on local and remote climate conditions, much effort has been made to assess the SST variability in the Mediterranean as a whole. However...

Despite their significant impact on global climate systems, polar oceans remain scarcely observed and insufficiently represented in climate models due to their extreme conditions. Now, autonomous instruments like underwater gliders offer the possibility to capture even fine-scale variations in these conditions. Recognizing their capabilities and...

The Ross Ice Shelf floats above the southern sector of the Ross Sea and creates a cavity where critical ocean-ice interactions take place. Crucial processes occurring in this cavity include the formation of Ice Shelf Water, the coldest ocean water, and the intrusion of Antarctic Surface Water, the main driver of frontal and basal melting. During th...

As Antarctic sea ice extent continues to reach record lows, significant efforts have been directed towards understanding the underlying processes and their regional differences within the Southern Ocean. Here, we explore the dynamics of zonal sea ice transport at the eastern gate of the Ross Sea from 1988 to 2023 using GIOMAS-model and ERA5-reanaly...

Climate change is exerting complex and transformative effects in the Arctic and Antarctic; regions that are essential to global climate, biodiversity, and sustainable futures. Given the polar regions’ roles in Earth’s system, a robust, coordinated, and innovative strategy to monitor and manage climate change effects is needed. Insufficient baseline...

The investigation of the spatio-temporal variability of water masses in key sectors of the Ross Sea: their role in Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) formation & their impact on basal melting of the Ross Ice Shelf
Presentation
Full-text available
The production of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is a crucial factor in determining the strength of the Meridional Overturning Circulation, and therefore plays a significant role in the ocean's contribution to the global climate. AABW is primarily formed in the Ross and Weddell Seas, with unique thermohaline characteristics. In recent years, a negat...

The Mediterranean Sea is well-known for its sensitivity to climate change, leading to extensive efforts in monitoring the basin as a whole. However, the Mediterranean is composed of individual sub-basins that exhibit different roles in its conveyor belt’s function. Additionally, impacts on societies and ecosystems have been shown to depend primaril...

This dissertation focuses on the Tyrrhenian Sea, a sub-basin of the Western Mediterranean with particular scientific interest. Despite its small size and isolated nature, it plays an important role in the thermohaline circulation of the Mediterranean Sea and portrays one of the most potentially vulnerable sub-basins at the same time. Considering, m...

The Copernicus Ocean State Report is an annual publication of the Copernicus Marine Service, established in 2014 by the European Commission for Copernicus 1 and renewed in 2021 for Copernicus 2. The report provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art, scientific overview on the current conditions, natural variations, and ongoing changes in the global...

The aim of this multiplatform approach is to evaluate during winter seasons: 1.) the intrusion of warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) or modified CDW (mCDW) under the RIS cavity, which is one of the main drivers of ice-shelf basal melting. 2.) the changes in the Ice Shelf Waters (ISW) from the RIS, which might receive water from the rapidly melting...

The study of the Tyrrhenian deep water properties and their distribution over time and space seems to be particularly relevant to the impact of climatic variability on the Mediterranean Sea. This ongoing work aims to contribute to a better understanding of the thermohaline variability, the main deep-water formation mechanisms, such as heat-salt flu...

In this study, 17 hydrologists with different experience in hydrological modelling applied the same conceptual catchment model (HBV) to a Greek catchment, using identical data and model code. Calibration was performed manually. Subsequently, the modellers were asked for their experience, their calibration strategy, and whether they enjoyed the exer...

The North Aegean Sea is considered as a region of deep water formation in the Mediterranean. Dense water formation events are known to take place rather infrequently and in the time intervals between such events, the bottom waters are excluded from interaction with other water masses through advection. Successive CTD profiles of an ARGO float trapp...

The effluent from a vertically integrated alumina and aluminum production and (since the late 2000s) thermal electric power production plant located on Antikyra bay in the Gulf of Corinth is being examined. Successive CTD profiles of an ARGO float trapped within a deep sub-basin of the North Aegean Sea during 2014-2015 enabled the identification of deep-water ventilation episodes and the determination of effective vertical eddy diffusivity during the stagnation period that followed these events. The assumption of turbulent mixing between the intermedi...
Thesis
This thesis discusses the Vertical Mixing in the North Aegean Sea based on the profiles collected by the MedArgo float sensor nr. 6901884, which has been trapped in the Athos Basin. The analyzed vertical and seasonal hydrographic characteristics indicate that there have not been any deep water formation episodes for the examined time (2014-2015). I...

Question
Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask if anyone of you is aware of a potential source/dataset to derive the ice shelf front/coastline of the Ross Ice Shelf during 2022?
There are some great datasets out there; from Chad Greene et al. (2020) https://github.com/chadagreene/ice-shelf-geometry/tree/main/data/coastline_data and Celia Baumhoer et al. https://geoservice.dlr.de/web/maps/eoc:icelines# but unfortunately they either don't extent to the year 2022 or the entire sector or the Ross Ice Shelf.
Are you maybe aware where I could find such data?
Thank you and kind regards,
Naomi
Question
Hi everyone,
out of curiosity- are you aware of a reliable housing or something similar that can be mounted for example on a rosette during deep casts?
I'm looking into the available technology but of course in most cases only ROVs are used for dives that reach 1000m. It is not meant for research- we're simply looking for a "cheap" way to obtain videos during CTD casts.
The best scenario would be if we can build something ourselves to mount for example a gopro with a light source in a housing onto the frame.
Any ideas are more than welcome !
Thank you in advance,
Naomi
Question
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if some of you have used a software that checks your dissertation or even manuscripts to be sure that you haven't missed something in your text?
Do you recommend any specific software like for example Plagiarism Checker X, strikeplagiarism.com, plagaware?
I am deciding if I should download a trustworthy software which ensures that your work won't be stored without your knowledge.
Turnitin seemed to be used often but it doesn't offer sign in options for single users, only licenses for entire institutions if I'm not mistaken.
And of course if there's a free software that doesn't store your documents that would be ideal.
Thank you in advance for your insight.
All the best,
Naomi
