Introduction
Nandini Borah is an Assistant Professor in the Don Bosco Institute of Management, Assam, India with over 11 years of experience. Education is widely accepted as being instrumental in promoting economic growth and development. Knowledge-based competition within the globalized economy is further reinforcing the importance of education in development and growth. Education affects not only the academic performance of the students, but also the economy and society at large. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of education on economic growth in the context of India. The study, using time series data from 1986 to 2013 from World Bank, analyses the causality between gross enrollment ratios at three levels, viz., primary, secondary and tertiary and gross domestic product (GDP) in the Indian context. The study further attempts to draw out the implications of the empirical results for development of a robust education policy.
