Two years study was made on variability in 42 indigenous and exotic varieties of sesame. With very few exceptions, highly significant differences were found between the varieties for the 15 characters investigated. A wide range of phenotypic and genotypic variability was exhibited by all characters except oil, protein and moisture, and 9 out of 15...

Simple, partial and multiple correlations, as well as regression coefficients, were worked out for 14 quantitative characters in a collection of 42 sesame varieties grown for two consecutive seasons. Total number of seeds per plant, number of pods per plant, plant height, height to the first pod and days to flowering and maturity, gave positive and...

A number of crosses were made to study the mode of inheritance of flower colour and number of locules per capsule of sesame. Red flower colour was dominant to white, and 4-loculed dominant over 8-loculed pods, each of the traits being controlled by a single gene pair segregating in a 3:1 F2 ratio.
Article
The extent of natural cross-fertilization in sesame was studied in two varieties, with contrasting flower colour, planted at two locations; in alternate rows or alternate holes; in adjacent or non-contiguous plots; and at 6 different spacings. The average out-crossing for the different treatments ranged between 3.1 and 6.7 per cent. The non-contigu...

In 90 local sesame types there was some association between seed coat colour and seed size, stem height, number of branches, number of pods, yield per plant and earliness. Forty-five coefficients show the degree of correlation between ten agronomic characters. Yield was significantly and positively correlated with all characters except the number o...
