Introduction
I am a Research Fellow of Bioaromatic, Sensor Centre of Excellence, project leader for the research grants (exploratory research, commercialized research) and member for several engineering education research. My research expertise are in Instruments, Smart Sensors (E-nose), Artificial Intelligence, k-nearest neighbors, Artificial Neural Network, Case-based Reasoning applied in several applications such as environment, food quality, waste odor pollution, biotechnology and automotive.

Project
Welding is a well-known reliable method of joining metals and commonly found in various industries including manufacturing, oil & gas and automotive. In these industries, the welding joints are constantly being tested with harsh environments such as high vibration, high stress and high pressure. It is vital important that the welding quality is assured. To reduce the risk of welding defects, there is a need for a real-time welding quality monitoring system that assist the welder doing better job. Several quality monitoring solutions have been presented in prior works, but most of them are not adapted as real-time solutions. This project propose a new technique to predict the defect during welding process based on welding current. Hypothetically, the welding current profile consists of sufficient information regarding welding parameters that ultimately lead to the welding quality or defects. Small signal analysis is needed to bring these information to the surface. By using UMP's existing welding facilities, welding current will be captured simultaneously from a diverse range of specimens to train and validate the small signal analysis (proposed technique). The current will then be analyzed in both time domain and frequency domain to get a new mathematical model. The specimens, on the other hand, will be analyzed using microstructure analysis. Correlations between the current shape and microstructure information will be drawn by Design of Experiment (DoE) statistical analysis. A portion of controlled current - microstructure data will be used to validate these correlations. Based on these correlations, it is expected that this alternative current monitoring technique will be able to predict the welding quality and defects during the welding process. This study will helps industrial welder to quantify their welding quality. It will also accelerate the learning process in welding training, where trainees are able to get immediate feedback on their techniques.
