The integration of subterranean LoRaWAN and non-terrestrial networks (NTN) delivers substantial economic and societal benefits in remote agriculture and disaster rescue operations. The LoRa modulation leverages quasi-orthogonal spreading factors (SFs) to optimize data rates, airtime, coverage and energy consumption. However, it is still challenging...
Wireless underground sensor networks (WUSNs) promise to deliver substantial social and economic benefits across different verticals. However, many of the relevant application scenarios are located in remote areas with no supporting infrastructure available. To address this challenge, we conceptualize in this study the underground direct-to-satellit...
The maritime autonomous surface ship (MASS) promises a revolution in naval logistics by offering sustainability, safety, and operational costs reduction. The MASS can bring to the Arctic and other hard-to-reach regions numerous social and economic benefits, thus contributing to equalizing access for human and machine terminals to connectivity, and...
Long Range-Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (LR-FHSS) has been recently introduced into the LoRaWAN protocol specification to increase network capacity and collision robustness, and enable direct connectivity between machine devices and the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. In this letter, we first construct the analytical and simulation models fo...
The offshore wind farms are gaining momentum due to their promise to offer sustainable energy with low pollution and greenhouse gases emission. However, despite all the immense technological progress of recent years, the operation in a harsh and hard-to-reach environment remains challenging. According to the reports, each offshore wind turbine requ...
Despite immense progress along different tracks, wireless connectivity for machine applications in remote areas is still very challenging. To address this vital need, in this article, we discuss and advocate the convergence between low-pow-er wide area network (LPWAN) grade massive machine-type communication (mMTC) wireless technologies and satelli...
Over the past few years, internet-of-Things (IoT) request a large number of smart devices to communicate and exchange information without direct human assistance. As the number of IoT nodes are increasing rapidly, the massive machine-type communication (mMTC) in 5G enables us to integrate the IoT massive traffic and applications without affecting t...
Low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs) are emerging rapidly as a fundamental Internet of Things (IoT) technology because of their low-power consumption, long-range connectivity, and ability to support massive numbers of users. With its high growth rate, Long-Range (LoRa) is becoming the most adopted LPWAN technology. This research work contributes t...
Recently, various efforts in human computer interaction (HCI) has been developed using user friendly interfaces such as voice, gestures and vision recognition. The most challenging approaches in HCI are to interface computers with biomedical signals such as Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electrocardiogram (ECG), and Electromyogram (EMG). The amplitude...
Home automation provides convenient, comfortable, energy saving, safety and security to people. Nowadays mostly home automation systems are based on English speech recognition. In northern Pakistan where majority of the people speaks Pashto and the literacy rate is very low, due to which most of the people deprived from the use of home automation....
In this paper a low cost and user friendly remote controlled home automation system is presented using Arduino board, Bluetooth module, smartphone, ultrasonic sensor and moisture sensor. A smartphone application is used in the suggested system which allows the users to control up to 18 devices including home appliances and sensors using Bluetooth t...
Home automation system achieved great popularity in the last decades and it increases the comfort and quality of life. In this paper an overview of current and emerging home automation systems is discussed. Nowadays most home automation systems consist of a smartphone and microcontroller. A smart phone application is used to control and monitor the...
In this paper a brief overview of silence removal and voice activity detection is discussed and a new method for silence removal is suggested. The objective of suggested method is to delete the silence and unvoiced segments from the speech signal which are very useful to increase the performance and accuracy of the system. Endpoint detection is use...
Cheating and academic dishonesty has always been a disturbing practice in an academic setting, it kills the creativity of a student. Research shows that the rate of cheating is increasing day by day. The aim of this work is to automatically detect cheating through whispering of a cheater in the exam room. A new method has been proposed that automat...
Internet of things (IoT) is network of devices which can communicate and transmit data with each other. Number of IoT devices is growing so fast. Today IoT devices are mostly used in healthcare, business and industrial unit. These IoT devices are playing important rolein saving cost, improving efficiency and managing machines. In this research work...
