The Department of Arabic at the University of Dhaka is like any other language and literature-related department which is supposed to teach classical poetry at both honours and master’s degree levels. However, the present (and thereby the past too) method of the teaching of classical Arabic poetry practised by the poetry course teachers in the depa...

The writing style of al-Jaahiz (d. 869 CE), one of the most successful and popular prose writers of Arab history, is sometimes pedagogically made questionable; for al-Jaahiz comparatively digresses to a great extent. Some literary critics hold that the aim of his digressions is nothing but to digress. Is his digression a mere digression, void of ar...
It has appeared to us through the study that, one of the artistic techniques taken by the ethical poetry in the Umayyad period is the assertion technique. Hence, many different forms of this technique which were used in the ethical poetry have been studied and examined in this article with special attention to their various implications in differen...
Understanding context is considered to be a vital key for decoding any literary texts. Therefore, contextual analysis is of great importance in all literary studies and, unlike the followers of new criticism, the researchers, in general, rely on contextual review while studying, analyzing and evaluating the artistic merit of any literary text. Howe...
Literary imagery is one of the most essential elements of poetry. The status of a poem gets elevated when its literary images, in terms of literary beauty, are of high quality and vice versa. For its structural formation comes from a combination of senses, memory, imagination and a creative mind. Was this artistic standard, i.e. literary imagery, p...
Abstract
‘Utilitarianism’ has been studied and practised in western philosophy, literary criticism and other sciences for more than two thousand years. Did classical Arabic literary criticism studied and practice it? If so, was it influenced by western philosophy? These are the fundamental questions which I have tried to find the answers to in the...
In the history of Islam the Umayyad period (41 -132 AH) was shaky due to various political, social, cultural, religious and civilizational reasons which the early Muslim period did not face. Of these, political insurgency, tribalism, disagreement, dogmatism and ethical polarization took root in the society and thereby threatened its unity. Under th...
Arabic literature throughout the ages has been proud of its lyric poetry, rhetoric, oratory and the sciences of language, especially in the Middle Ages when the European literatures were far from this lofty position. However, Arabic literature, from the beginning till its renaissance period, had been lacking the most highly regarded literary genre...
The conflict between Eastern and Western civilizations is a fundamental problem on which many Arab writers and poets have written. However, few of them have succeeded in providing solutions to this problem. Egyptian novelist Yehyia Hakki (1992) is regarded as one of these few who have given solutions to this issue. As for the literary work by which...
The term “Islamic da’wa literature” and “Islamic literature” are two confusing Islamic literary terms. Maybe the reason why it has happened is the fact that the word “Islam” exists in the both terms. However, the terms are not actually the same as seem to be. For this reason, this article has shaded light on the original concepts of the terms and t...
