BACKGROUND:Lyme borreliosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by spirochetes of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. There are no reports on this subject in dogs from Iran. OBJECTIVES:Determining the serologic prevalence level of produced antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex in three Caspian littoral provinces of...

Chromoendoscopy has improved the early diagnosis of gastric cancer in humans but its usefulness in dogs is unknown. This study aimed at assessing whether adding narrow band imaging (NBI) or indigo carmine (IC) chromoendoscopy (CE) can improve the diagnostic yield of standard white light endoscopy (WLE). We compared the real-time findings of canine...

Background Gastric carcinoma (GC) is uncommon in dogs, except in predisposed breeds such as Belgian Shepherd dogs (BSD) of the Tervuren and Groenendael varieties. When GC is diagnosed in dogs it is often late in the disease, resulting in a poorer prognosis. The aim of this prospective clinical study was to investigate possible associations of gastr...

Some Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium strains are used as probiotics or feed additives. Adherence to the intestinal mucosa is considered a crucial step for intestinal bacteria to colonize and further interact with the host epithelium and the immune system. In dogs, there are no studies investigating the adhesion of E. faecalis and E. faecium to...

A study was undertaken to determine the possible interaction between aggressive behavior and Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) disease progression based on semi‑quantitative viral load levels and health status in naturally FIV‑infected cats. FIV status was determined in ninety‑six owned and stray cats, using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR)...

The intestinal microbiota is believed to play a role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease in humans and chronic inflammatory enteropathy (CIE) in dogs. While most previous studies have described the gut microbiota using sequencing methods, it is fundamental to assess the spatial distribution of the bacteria for a better understanding o...

Mammary tumours are mentioned as the most common tumours in female dogs and approximately half of them are detected malignant. p53 gene mutations are demonstrated to be the most common genetic alteration in canine mammary tumours. The present study was conducted to evaluate exon-1 of p53 gene mutations in tissue samples of canine mammary tumours by...

Belgian Shepherd dogs (BSD) are considered at increased risk for gastric carcinoma (GC), mucous metaplasia and glandular dysplasia. In humans, gastric mucosal atrophy, metaplasia and dysplasia are all linked to GC. We performed a prospective clinical trial exploring early diagnosis of such conditions. Gastroscopy with histology of mucosal biopsies...

Pneumonia is one of the potential complications of general anaesthesia in horses. Anaesthesia is known to increase neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of horses after lateral recumbency, but studies after dorsal recumbency are lacking. Our primary aim was to determine when lung inflammation reaches its maximum and how rapidly BALF cy...

Abstract Background Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) 2 and 9 are zinc- and calcium-dependent endopeptidases involved in the breakdown and reconstitution of extracellular matrix under both physiological and pathological conditions. Mucosal MMP-2 and -9 activities have been reported to be upregulated in the intestine of humans with inflammatory bowel...

Background: Intestinal absorption of bile acids is mediated by the apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT). Fecal bile acid dysmetabolism has been reported in dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathy (CIE). Objective: Characterization of ASBT distribution along the intestinal tract of control dogs and comparison to dogs with CIE....

A study was undertaken to determine the incidence of redirected aggression among naturally infected cats with FIV and moreover, to see whether there is any difference in the amount of targeted proviral DNA between cats with aggressive behavior and non-aggressive cats. A total number of 96 cats were studied on the prevalence of FIV disease using nes...

Background: Intestinal mucosal S100A12 and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are inflammatory biomarkers in humans with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, these biomarkers have not been studied in the intestinal mucosa of dogs with chronic enteropathies (CE), even though dogs with CE have increased S100A12 concentrations in feces and serum. This study...

S100A12 and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are considered inflammatory markers of chronic enteropathy (CE) and mainly originate from granulocytes. Increased concentrations of canine S100A12 (cA12) in feces and serum were found in dogs with CE. Intestinal mucosal MPO activities have been reported to be increased in humans with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD...

Objective: Damages caused by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) of the small intestine are an emergency case which occurs due to various factors such as a hernia and twisting of intestines for cats and dogs. Beneficial effects of erythropoietin (EPO) have been demonstrated in various experimental models of ischemic injury but there is no information about...

Objective: The liver is one of the largest resident populations of macrophages or Kupffer cells (KC) which are key components of the innate immune system. These cells are intimately involved in the liver’s response to transient ischemia and various other stresses. Despite many published studies reporting the beneficial effects of pharmacological pr...

Background: Relatively few laboratory markers have been evaluated for the detection or monitoring of intestinal inflammation in canine chronic enteropathies, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Previous research found that the intestinal mucosal levels of S100A12 and myeloperoxidase (MPO), as biomarkers of gut inflammation, were elevated i...

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography has been shown to be an accurate and appropriate tool for measurement of gallbladder volume in humans. Therefore, we applied this novel technique for the first time to study fasting and postprandial gallbladder volume in 10 healthy dogs and compared the results with those of two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonograph...

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) 2 and 9 are zinc-dependent endopeptidases that contribute to the control of breakdown and reconstitution of extracellular matrix under both normal and pathological conditions. Intestinal mucosal levels of MMP-2 and -9 have been shown to be increased in animal models and human IBD. To our knowledge, the presense of M...

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an inflammatory lung disease mainly caused by tobacco smoke inhalation. Methods: Fifteen healthy adult male cats were categorized into 3 groups: (1) control group, (2) exposed to cigarette smoke (CS), and (3) exposed to CS treated with tiotropium. Results: Increases in clinical signs and air...

Although the biology and ecology of the arthropod vectors are different, some factors, such as global warming, the increasing abundance of mosquitoes, the movement of domestic hosts, and the abundance of wild reservoirs, can act as favourable factors for the distribution of infections.
