What will be impact of technology in popularity of Western Music Notation for musicology and music composition? Since invention of phonograph transcribing songs and music for the purpose of preservation became useless because simply we can record it to avoid a song to be forgotten. Today development of technology provide a huge possibility of analyzing a piece of music. Most of young composers benefit from a great verity of sound processors and music software in their music compositions. Does it mean that western music notation is going to be less required in future of musicology and composition?
We have developed our social skills when “outdoor social relations” were part of our everyday life. What can parents do for their kids to develop her/his social skills when they are locked in their homes because of pandemic virus? Will setting up little group performances help coordinating with other people and closely experiencing "living in society"?
Will stage performance start a huge decline if scientists do not succeed to develop any vaccine for COVID-19? What will happen to our “needs for socializing” at performance events?
People prefer to take their time with their cellphones more than any other companion. At the beginning of gramophones a number of musicians saw the new technology as a danger to concert music. They surely could not imagine the way music is consumed today.
Digital tech surely make it possible to benefit from music everywhere and anytime. However, listening music by so called "smartphone" in our privet will make humanly connecting to community nonfunctional.
Does technology care about reestablishing presence of us in community? How far we go in depth of loneliness?
Will we be more flexible and welcoming to accept "different musical cultures" there after? For how long we remain "kind", before we turn back to intolerating "otherness"?
Folk musicians in recently developed villages and towns are more and more exposing to Western music in their everyday lives. Are there any risk of unwanted changes in their traditional music as a result of such exposures? If so, in what ways?
For several years I am observing diverse views toward how should one culture preserve and keep its traditional or folk music alive. I met a number of modern conservatories having courses on teaching this kind of music. Even though, such music conventionally were being taught orally for thousands of years. Do you think teaching traditional and folk music through modern system will eventually harm the nature of this kind of heritage or it is they only way to keep it alive in our time.
I personally have written a short article in case of Iranian traditional music a while ago in which I wrote some of my suggestions. However, I recently had a chance to visit Beijing central conservatory and listened to the outcome of teaching traditional music there and that visit made me think more about this issue.
I think it is good for our living on earth that one day we keep either “metric system” or “imperial system” and saying good bye to the other one. I guess it brings a better understanding and communications. But, we are mostly do not have same idea about cultural features like arts, music, clothing, foods, etc.
The other thing is that some ethnic people in developing countries think that westerners would rather that the "others" keep their traditional way of life to have fun in their visits to strange lands. What’s your opinion would you keep your traditional way of life even if it’s demands hard work and harsh way of life?
Tradition is a huge concept and I think the problem starts here. I present an example:
When we say tradition it also includes water supplying for villages in remote area of developing countries. A number of traditional water supplying particularly from rivers and well involve spreading disease when we compare it with developed water refinery systems. Do we prefer that those villagers keep their traditional water supplying? This is only one instance I provided here to clarify a bit my point.

Video games are changing how we interact and communicate with each other. They can provide an authentic and collaborative platform for building new communities and connecting people. Since video games generally rely on visual elements that must be recognized by the players, most of them are not accessible by visually impaired people. In this research, we study the sonifcation and interaction issues in the design of computer games for visually impaired individuals. We have proposed an audio game called GrandEscape with the focus on special needs of these people while playing. A comprehensive set of user studies have been performed to evaluate different interaction and sonifcation techniques in terms of providing the sense of presence and gaming experience.
Today human is on the cutting edge of Information and Communication Technologies, making lots of valuable data for their descendants. However, there are main issues in converting and preserving the previous traditional and cultural data which have been transferred via stories, dances and activities from the ancestors to the descendants due to negligence in gathering and maintaining of these cultural and location-based information.
The following interdisciplinary research helps to prevent the loss of the cultural practice in the future and will keep it for descendants. It can also improve and upgrade the knowledge of Azeri musical movements of the body and dances via capturing and storing the motion data within the geo-database. The findings of this study may apply to any other culture. The captured and collected body movements is from the north-west parts of Iran, Azerbaijan; which is known as Azeri Dance in the world.
This project consists of two phases of (1) possibility of identification, capturing and maintenance of musical movements on cultural-climatic backgrounds which in here is downsized to a case study of an Azeri folk dance, and (2) endeavor at utilizing these musical movements of the body in creation of melodic and rhythmic patterns as the innovation of this interdisciplinary project.
In this study, the explained methodology is completely experimental and performed in the Motion Capture Lab at the faculty of Multimedia in Tabriz Islamic Art University. Three highly skilled gesture performers participated in this experiment and each of them performed the musical movements and repeated several times. The captured data is a part of a famous folk tune called Terekeme (pronounces as /Tærækæmæ/) which is selected as an “Arrangement by Master” to have the same movements amonge all performers. After that, the rotation movement of hands and feet sonified by the aid of suggested method. We also did pay attention to the aesthetic property of the generated music and used some rules in creating the melody such as motifs, single or two-core construction, variety and unity.
The results consist of (1) a solution for improving data capture process to preserve Azeri dance data, (2) extracting contours of hands and feet rotation along both x and y axis from the captured data, (3) presenting a method for sonification of captured data and (4) utilizing musical movements of the body in creation of melodic and rhythmic patterns; which as the final product designed via Unity game engine, the player can move around and get as closer as he/she can to the performers to watch the performed dance and hear the melodic and rhythmic patterns generated through rotation data of hands and feet beside the visualized notes on the screen.
Hopefully better results along with georeferanced and geospatial database will be added in phase two as branding tool based on culture for each part of the earth in the near future.
