Introduction
My research interest is focused on young learners and foreign languages. As I work in education and training of pre-service teachers, occasionally in-service teachers too, my interest spans from theoretical to practical issues in SLA, early ISLA and ELT and their interactions.

The language achievement of pre-primary and primary EFL learners (N = 147) was investigated regarding the participants’ age at the beginning of EFL learning and their length of exposure to organised instruction. A significant relationship was found between the age at the start of students’ learning and early achievement; however, it was not confirm...
The quantity of target language input available to learners contributes to the understanding of target language development. The present paper reports on a longitudinal study of the relationship between the amount of non-native teachers’ EFL input and learners’ aural achievement in instructed SLA. Young learners (N=132) were followed over a three-y...
A context-sensitive approach to SLA research acknowledges the interrelatedness of linguistic development and situational/cultural context. Over the years, many studies looked into the formal context of early English language learning (EELL) but the informal realms of learner experience are still largely unknown. Hence, context matters related to ou...
Lack of adequately trained teachers to young learners has been an issue despite SLA experts' repeated warnings about their critical significance for early English language learning outcomes (e.g. Emery, 2012; Enever, 2014; Rokita-Jaśkow & Ellis, 2019). In this chapter the issue of teacher beliefs and practices in EELL is addressed within the contex...
This study is concerned with the development of an instrument used to assess young learners’ reading strategies in English as a foreign language. It describes in detail the exploratory factor analysis that was used to improve the research instrument and to explore the relationships between survey items. Also, a reliability analysis was carried out....
First Language in Second Language Acquisition Theories and Formal Instruction: from Monolingualism towards Multilingualism. Abstract. This article is about the role of the first language in the 20th century second language theories and the change in the way this role is understood at the turn of the century. Thanks to emergent ideas about language...
Current understanding of second language acquisition processes is based on the position that second language learners rely and depend on their L1 as well as on all of their language-related experience. This paper presents results of a questionnaire study aimed to explore Croatian EFL instructors’ beliefs about the role of L1 in English language dev...
