Introduction
Being a philosopher by training, I specialized in applied philosophy, with a strong focus on ethical questions related to technological and biomedical innovations. After many years of working at various academic institutes and institutions, I took the leap and became a self-employed researcher, writer, speaker and consultant. My main focus these days is on digitization ethics and public health issues.

Objectives: Holistic sexuality education (HSE) is a new concept in sexuality education (SE). Since it differs from other types of SE in a number of important respects, strategies developed for the evaluation of the latter are not necessarily applicable to HSE. In this paper the authors provide a basis for discussion on how to evaluate HSE. Method...

When dealing with questions of scientific responsibility, we are often concerned with the ethical implications of new and promising but at the same time risky advances in technology and with the responsibility researchers might bear for the application of their scientific results. One very well known example is the question of whether or not the ph...

In the last decade human embryo research, i.e. stem cell research, therapeutic cloning, reproductive cloning and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), has become one of the most controversial bioethical issues scientists as well as ethicists, legal experts, politicians and the public have been confronted with. Besides various national debates th...

Bioethical and bio-political questions are increasingly tackled by committees, councils, and other advisory boards that work on different and often interrelated levels. Research ethics committees work on an institutional or clinical level; local advisory boards deal with biomedical topics on the level of particular political regions; national and i...

On the basis of our understanding of the current state of scientific knowledge, presumed medical potential, existing regulations and the sociological and ethical considerations that have been presented in this study, we make the following recommendations on the moral status of human embryos, safety measures that need to be established if embryo res...

Over the past years embryo research has aroused an enormous interest in the public arena and in expert literature ranging from the life sciences to reflective disciplines such as philosophy and jurisprudence. It seems, however, that results of scientific evaluation of embryo research are not adequately taken up in public debate. It is generally adm...

Chapter
In this chapter we consider scientific and clinical aspects of research on human embryos. We review the current state of the art, highlighting some instances where research in the past was particularly important, but we also give speculations as to what might be feasible in the not too distant future. It is not possible to cover all topics in depth...

Besides reproductive purposes, which we considered in Chapter 1, the second major purpose of embryo research is to be seen in the development of new tissue and organ replacement therapies on the basis of material derived from embryonic cells or fetal tissues. Since the use of embryos and fetuses for other than reproductive purposes has often been d...

At the present time regulation of embryo research differs from country to country. Some countries prohibit embryo research altogether, some countries permit embryo research to varying degrees, while other countries do not have any regulation in this area at all, though institutions in which research can be carried out do exist or could easily be es...

The measurement and analysis of public perceptions of science and technology have gradually gained in importance as an input to the design of public policies and the regulation of scientific and technological advances. Although science and technology had traditionally remained closed to the formal intervention of the lay public, the last two decade...
