KD-GB uzanımlı Baklan Grabeni’nin kuzeybatısında, Uşak ilinin 50 km güneyinde yer alan Karahallı ve Çivril yerleşkelerinin arasında, Pliyo-Kuvaterner yaşlı gölsel kırıntılı birimlerin üst seviyelerinde gözlenen traverten çökellerinin oluşum süreçlerini, ayrıntılı fasiyes ve fasiyes ilişkilerini belirlemek, yaş ve izotop bulgularıyla bölgenin paleoiklimsel ve paleoortamsal gelişimini ortaya koymak bu projenin en önemli hedefleri arasında yer almaktadır. Daha önceki çalışmalarda bölgede, TKİ (Türkiye Kömür İşletmesi) tarafından yaklaşık 10 adet derin sondajlar gerçekleştirilmiş ve inceleme alanı içerisinde çok farklı seviyelerde ve farklı kalınlıklarda traverten numuneleri kesilmiştir. Sondajlardan elde edilen bu traverten karot örneklerinin bu proje sayesinde bölgede ilk defa çalışılacak olması, projenin önemini de önemli ölçüde arttırmaktadır. Bu amaçla, gölsel traverten çökellerinden sistematik olarak örneklemeler yapılacak, petrografik (ince kesit), yaş (U/Th), C ve O (duraylı izotop) ve palinolojik (polen ve spor) analizleri gerçekleştirilecektir.
