Introduction
My current research is about the impact of parental cognitions and practices on child development and later mental health. I'm working with different data sets, including longitudinal data from Chile and UK in order to: a) examine the association between indicators of home environment, parenting practices and child performance on the higher cognitive processing, b) identify mechanisms through which parents impact on children's mental health and c) inform early preventive interventions.

There is now evidence indicating that first 5 years of life are of major importance for learning and health across life course (1, 2). This period is key in providing detection and timely supports for children with developmental disabilities (3, 4). Because of this, many investments have been done around the world (5). Specifically for this article...

Both maternal and paternal postnatal depression (PND) are associated with increased risk of less optimal offspring developmental outcomes. Early exposure to differences in maternal and paternal vocalisation behaviours that may be associated with maternal and paternal PND, may be important in this relationship. However, little research has captured...

Behavioural signatures of intergenerational transmission of mental health: triangulation of epidemiology and developmental psychology Despite decades of research and parenting support programmes, children of mentally ill mothers remain substantially more likely to have mental health problems themselves. In this project, we shed new light on how to...

Variations in parenting across large populations have rarely been described. It also remains unclear which specific domains of parenting are important for which specific offspring developmental outcomes. This study describes different domains of early parenting behaviours and their genetic heritability, then determines the extent to which specific...

Children who present children’s behavioral and emotional problems (BEP) - aggressive and hyperactive behaviors that stem from difficulty understanding and expressing emotions (Denham, et al., 2003) - past the toddler years are at risk for school failure and later behavioral problems (Campbell et al., 2000). A large body of research with American sa...

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Chile on 27 February 2010, displacing nearly 2,000 children aged less than five years to emergency housing camps. Nine months later, this study assessed the needs of 140 displaced 0-5-year-old children in six domains: caregiver stability and protection; health; housing; nutrition; psychosocial s...

Background: Elucidating risk pathways for under-achieving at school can inform strategies to reduce the number of adolescents leaving school without passing grades in core subjects. Maternal depression can compromise the quality of parental care and is associated with multiple negative child outcomes. However, only a few small studies have investi...

Parenting programs are relatively low cost and could be easier than other interventions to scale-up in low and middle-income countries. The Chilean version of Nobody's Perfect has a been relatively successful in scaling up, including adapting materials, training facilitators and implementing in primary health care centres in a middle income country...

The term executive function (EF) describes a set of cognitive abilities that control and regulate cognition and behaviour. EF is necessary for goal-directed behaviour, including the abilities to initiate and stop actions, to monitor and change behaviour, and to plan future behaviour when faced with novel tasks and situations. EF allows us to antici...

There is a large scientific literature about disasters' effects on adult population; however, comparatively few studies explore the effects of natural disasters on children, especially during early childhood and school years. Three years after the Chilean earthquake of 27 February 2010, we review the national and international literature on natural...

Spontaneous preterm labor (SPL) continues to be a health problem that has not been fully explained. Preterm labor has been associated with infant death and morbidity among infants and children and for that reason is problem concern that is important to study. In several reports, however, researchers have proposed that exposure to stressors may play...
