The illegal trade has been threatening tortoise populations worldwide for decades. Nowadays, however, DNA typing and forensic genetic approaches allow us to investigate the geographic origin of confiscated animals and to relocate them into the wild, providing that suitable molecular tools and reference data are available. Here we assess the suitabi...

The present paper focuses on the ability of the European Leaf-toed gecko, Euleptes europaea , an endemic species of the western Mediterranean, to live in low-nutrient habitats. Its distribution is mainly insular and particularly noteworthy is its ability to live on islets and rocks. This work includes data originating from surveys carried out on 11...

Grass snakes are widely distributed across the Western Palearctic. Recent phylogeo-graphic studies provided evidence that three distinct parapatric species exist. Two of these occur in Italy, Natrix helvetica and N. natrix, and a contact zone between both taxa has been suggested for northeastern Italy. Moreover, previous investigations revealed for...

The Corsica-Sardinia archipelago provides a simplified model for studying the response of insular and coastal temperate biotas to the cyclic contraction-expansion of habitats associated to Pleistocene climate and sea-level oscillations. We investigated the phylogeography and historical demography of the Leaf-toed Gecko Euleptes europaea using both...

How a native gecko manages to coexist with an alien rodent in the Mediterranean since thousands of years? What kind of eco-ethological adaptations or evolutionary adjustments enables this gecko to persist? The present study explores the interaction between the endemic European Leaf-toed gecko (Euleptes europaea) and the alien Black rat (Rattus ratt...
Article
Sea level oscillations occurred during the Pleistocene have strongly affected islands’ physiography by changing area, elevation, and even the number of islands rising above the sea level. Such changes had direct consequences on island genetic diversity by promoting genetic admixture during glacial marine regressions while fragmentation or even exti...

The genus Anguis is known to be mainly continental in the Mediterranean area, and accordingly it has never been recorded in Western Mediterranean islands. Here we report for the first time the presence of the slow worm in a Western Mediterranean island, the Ile Sainte-Marguerite from Lérins archipelago (southeastern France). The molecular analysis...

Background Podarcis tiliguerta is a wall lizard endemic to the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia. Previous findings of high mtDNA and morphological diversity have led to the suggestion that it may represent a species complex. Here, we analysed mitochondrial and nuclear markers (mtDNA, 3110 bp; 6 nDNA loci, 3961 bp) in P. tiliguerta samp...

We present a recent survey of the vertebrate fauna of Cavallo, a small island belonging to the Lavezzi archipelago located between Corsica and Sardinia. This island is the only inhabited one off the coast of Corsica and underwent deep landscape and ecosystem changes in the past 50 years induced by touristic development. The herpetofauna of the Cava...

In 2002, nesting of Loggerhead turtle on an eastern Corsica beach has been proven, but no manifestation of such event had been observed since. More than ten years later, during the summer 2014, two nesting attempts were observed on two beaches of eastern Corsica. These nesting attempts, performed by the same animal, have been aborted repeatedly due...

e Corsican Giraglia islet is inhabited by two gecko species. One of them Euleptes europaea is widespread on all the rocky outcrops, while Tarentola mauritanica is strictly restricted to the walls of a single construction. We hypothesized that the powdery prasinite rock was the key factor constraining its expansion. Preliminary field experiments and...

Tunisian geckos count nine species (1 is insular relict, 1 is endemic, 2 are ubiquitous and 5 are enfeoffed). We aim to determine factors influencing their distributions. Surveys were founded on environmental divisions. Presence/absence data for 113 grids were analyzed using multivariate tools. 18 environmental variables were revealed and clustered...

Hierophis viridiflavus has a strong diurnal rhythm as demonstrated by many field studies. It belongs to the "Whip snakes" characterized by slender bodies, large eyes, high speed, saurophagy and diurnality. On Giraglia island (Corsica) the snakes do forage also nightly. This unexpected shift in the circadian rhythm might be related to a local adapta...

Psammodromus algirus doriae is an endemic subspecies to, Galition and Fauchelle islets (Archipelago of la Galitte in Northern Tunisia). The aim of this project is to provide a first insight on this unstudied subspecies, resolve its status as species/subspecies and pinpoint the threats ringing it to formulate a proper conservation plan.
