The ‘Smart Home’ is a strongly technology-driven field. While user-centered requirements have been reported for specific features, a considerable gap persists for design based on an everyday home context and the social and emotional nature of the home. To address this, we present a user-centered design process to question and expand narrow framings...

End-user programming concepts are increasingly employed in smart home research to address the growing complexity of controlling smart home environments. Different approaches and visual styles of end-user programming have been proposed and implemented within this context. Smart home control does however not only necessitate end-user programming but...

The term wellbeing is widely used in the field of persuasive technology, especially when helping people to achieve positive changes in their attitudes and behaviors. Computer security is recognized as an important aspect of nuclear security: Effective measures, which include computer security education, have been integrated into nuclear security recommendations and systems. At this stage, it is crucial to understand and evaluate the current state-of-play, as perceived by (potential) recipients of education. Wit...

Persuasive technologies aim at helping individuals to achieve changes in their behaviors-changes that are often embedded in a vision of "wellbeing". With a greater recognition of mental health as an area of concern, some persuasive technologies also specifically aim at mental aspects of wellbeing. Yet, whether targeted as a whole or in part, "wellb...

Personalizing persuasive technologies can increase their efficacy at motivating the desired behavior change. Building on the success of the 2016 workshop which witnessed 16 paper presentations, 2 keynote presentations, and 43 participants from over 10 different countries, this year's workshop aims to advance the research area even further by addres...

Although a wide range of e-Participation platforms have become available, the level of public participation has remained low. In order to promote public participation, governments around the world as well as academia are currently exploring new ways to design participation methods that are more engaging to use. One of the applied strategies is to a...

By incorporating game elements into e-participation tools, municipalities and scholars alike are aiming to reach participants beyond the "usual suspects". However, it is little known how different social groups react to the concept of gamified participation. While younger individuals are said to approve of games, older generations are thought to op...

The goal of persuasive games is to change behavior and attitudes in a desirable manner, e.g., to promote physical activity. Research has shown that personalized persuasive approaches are more successful than one-size-fits-all approaches. As a means for personalization, sex has been investigated with results showing that women are overall more persu...

The relationship between socioeconomic status and health parameters such as growth rate is known to be strong: A lower socioeconomic position is usually accompanied by higher stress load through less nutritional income and higher work load, which is then reflected in the body1,2. Like reduced body height, the appearance of a certain kind of between...
