• Increasing demand for biomass has led to an on‐going intensification of fuel wood plantations with possible negative effects on open land biodiversity. Hence, ecologists increasingly call for measures that reduce those negative effects on associated biodiversity. However, our knowledge about the efficiency of such measures remains scarce. • We in...

Conifer-dominated forests of the Northern Hemisphere are prone to natural disturbances, such as windstorms, which create canopy openings by downing single trees to complete stands. The size of a windthrow determines how strongly microclimatic conditions are changed. After windstorms, damaged trees are commonly logged to ‘salvage’ economic returns,...

Callistus - Gemeinschaft für Zoologische & Ökologische Untersuchungen [association for zoological and ecological research] is involved in the zoological inventory of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. We are trapping and collecting in selected habitats and reached meanwhile totals of 340 spider species (Araneae), 138 carabid species (Coleoptera: Carabidae), 19 havestmen species (Opiliones) and 10 pseudoscorpion (Pseudoscorpiones) species. Numerous Red Data List species, rare species and species at the border of their known distribution are recorded.
