Introduction
I have been working on microzooplankton, particularly tintinnids, for long, including species identification, biodiversity, biomass, trophic transfer of tintinnids to copepods, functional traits, feeding ecology, prediction, and global distribution in the context of ocean warming and anthropogenic inputs. Additionally, I have experience in dilution experiments, culture of copepods and tintinnids, and statistical analysis and modelling in marine ecosystem using R and Python.

Although the productivity–biodiversity relationship (PBR) has been a hot topic, few studies have considered how anthropogenic pressures affect PBRs in marine microzooplankton. Here, we provide the first insights into PBRs in tintinnid assemblages using 18‐yr data from Jiaozhou Bay, a typical coastal bay in the Yellow Sea. We hypothesized and verifi...

Marine planktonic ciliates serve as a key component of the plankton food web. Their vegetative stages have frequently been studied, whereas their cyst stages have largely been ignored. Seasonal encystment and excystment of ciliates has great implications for population persistence, maintenance of biodiversity and stability of ecosystem processes. H...

We explored the relationships among different tintinnid populations on micro-, meso-, and basin-scales from three regions across the Pacific Ocean, including the Costa Rica Dome (CRD) in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the Celebes Sea (CS), and the Tokara Strait (TS) in the Western Pacific Ocean. We quantified the species occurrence, vertical and biogeo...

Capture-based methods are commonly used for biomonitoring fish assemblages in freshwater. The recent advancement in environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding provides a sensitive, cost-effective, and non-intrusive alternative to traditional methods. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of this approach in river–lake systems has yet to be assessed, and ther...

Background The drastic change in an ecosystem as a threshold phenomenon caused by abrupt changes in environmental conditions is a focus of current ecological research. However, the study of ecological thresholds has generally been limited to estimating the threshold values of single factors. Using eDNA metabarcoding technology, we collected zooplan...

Sargassum vachellianum and Sargassum horneri are the main dominant species and primary producers of seaweed beds in Chinese coastal ecosystems that play an important role in marine blue carbon sinks. However, due to the influence of frequent human activities and global climate change, the seaweed beds formed by Sargassum vachellianum and Sargassum...

Seaweed plays an important role in energy production in marine, coastal, and island ecosystems. The protection of seaweed beds is a key point for coastal ecosystem health, but the community characteristics, dominant species, and distribution of seaweed beds in the coastal waters of China are still unknown. Dividing seaweed beds based on their ecolo...

Here, we present the complete mitochondrial genome of Lophosquillia costata. The genome is 15,771 bp in length with a 68.07% AT content. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNAs genes, and 22 tRNAs. Both rRNAs are encoded on the light strand. Besides seven tRNAs are encoded on the light strand (trnY, trnQ, trnV, trnL1, trnP, trnH, and trnF),...

Here we present the complete mitochondrial genome of Tetraclita squamosa squamosa, which is 15,191 bp in length with 67.20% AT content. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal-RNA genes and 22 transfer-RNA genes. All PCGs except nad4l in T. squamosa squamosa start with ATN, and terminated with a complete stop codon, except nad3. Phylogenet...

Here we present the complete mitochondrial genome of Megabalanus tintinnabulum. The genome is 15,107 bp in length with a 67.35% AT content. It contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 rRNAs genes, and 22 tRNAs. Both rRNAs are encoded on the light strand, as in the other crustacean and barnacle mitochondrial genomes. Besides five tRNAs are encoded...

This article contains supportive data related to a research article entitled “Annual variation of species richness and lorica oral diameter characteristics of tintinnids in a semi-enclosed bay of western Pacific” (Feng et al., 2018) [1]. This article describes long term data of tintinnid assemblages in Jiaozhou Bay, Yellow sea, a semi-enclosed basi...

Seaweed beds are a nearshore marine ecosystem composed of macroalgae and other marine organisms. In recent years, soil erosion, pollution, and other land-based mechanisms have severely reduced nearshore algal populations, particularly in areas influenced by the outflow of the Yangtze and Qiantang rivers. The Ma'an Archipelago is located in the estu...

Sediment plays an important role in controlling the distribution of macroalgae. We examined the distribution of Sargassum horneri in the field considering the effect of sedimentation, and conducted sediment manipulation experiments to test the hypothesis that sedimentation affects the early settlement stages of S. horneri. Field samplings were cond...

A new tintinnid ciliate, Tintinnopis estuariensis sp. nov. was found in the estuary of Yangtze River, China. It was most abundant in September. Its arenaceous lorica is cylindro-conical in shape, (120–180) μm × (50–75) μm in size, agglutinated with mineral particles, and open at both ends. Two characters distinguish it from others: the unique later...

Information of tintinnid community, as an important component of plankton, was limited in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard (Arctic), which is an important Arctic monitoring site for global change. In this paper, we studied the species composition, spatial, and vertical distribution of tintinnids in Kongsfjorden in July 2012. Water samples for tintinnid study...

Marine planktonic ciliates are a link between microbial food web and classical food chain. They play a pivotal role in material cycling and energy flow in marine ecosystem. Since the 1970s, growth rates of marine planktonic ciliates have been studied in both laboratory and in situ. Only few laboratory studies on ciliate growth rates are available i...

The study of deep sea (>200 m) plankton is the frontier of marine biology and ecology research in China. Summarizing existing knowledge of deep sea plankton is important to Chinese research in this field. Most phytoplankton will die when they settle out of the euphotic zone. However, some phytoplankton manages to survive in the deep sea despite of...

An investigation was made on the abundance and biomass of planktonic ciliates in the shelf of East China Sea in May (spring) and November (autumn), 2011. The abundance of the ciliates in spring and autumn was averagely (614 +/- 861) and (934 +/- 809) ind x L(-1), and the biomass was averagely (1.70 +/- 3.91) and (0.93 +/- 0.99) microg C x L(-1), re...

As one of the important components of microzooplankton, marine planktonic ciliates serve as a crucial link between microbial food web and classical food chain. Some planktonic ciliates in their life cycle can encyst, and can excyst when environment is favorable. The encystment and excystment cycle is very important to the planktonic population dyna...
