Shaft voltage has become a serious problem in large power plants. This book assigns the potential sources of shaft voltage and its effects on bearings. The shaft voltages and bearing currents are due to the common mode voltage component of the output voltage from the static excitation system. The main objective of this book is to develop a gas turb...

Shaft voltage and bearing current have become a serious problem in large power plants, the investigation of shaft voltage and bearing current in rotating machines have generated much attention in the field of electrical engineering. In this paper we present an investigation of bearing current phenomena through the use of a simulation model of excit...
Article
Full-text available
The investigation of shaft voltages and bearing currents in rotating machines are important as these voltages can lead to critical problems in the journal bearings. The shaft voltage is an unwanted voltage and the possible cause of the shaft voltage and bearing current is due to the existence of common-mode voltage (CMV) contributed by the static-e...

Nowadays, the consumption of homes is around 40% of the total world consumption. Furthermore, 21% of the total greenhouse gas emissions are produced by homes. The emergence of smart grids has presented new opportunities for home energy management (HEM) systems for the purpose of reducing energy in the residential sector. Demand response (DR) tool t...

Electrical energy consumption varies between annual seasons and days of the week, where the highest peak typically occurs when the weather is hot. In order to meet high power demands, electricity suppliers are compelled to increase generation by building more conventional power plants. However, this is unsustainable, because increased carbon dioxid...

The accurate forecast of water demand is challenging for water utilities, specifically when considering the implications of climate change. As such, this is the first study that focuses on finding associations between monthly climate factors and municipal water consumption, using baseline data collected between 1980 and 2010. The aim of the study w...

The increasing demand for electricity and the emergence of smart grids have presented new opportunities for a home energy management system (HEMS) that can reduce energy usage. HEMS incorporates a demand response (DR) tool that shifts and curtails demand to improve home energy consumption. This system commonly creates optimal consumption schedules...

This paper presents a case study on a survey and measurement being carried out for the purpose of determining residential electric power consumption and awareness toward smart energy management system in the areas of Putrajaya and Kajang, Malaysia. Questionnaires were developed with 37 questions grouped in 5 different sections related to home appli...

In the last decades, home energy consumption has increased significantly due to increasing load demand in the residential sector. This paper presents a home energy management (HEM) algorithm to manage the home appliances in a house during a demand response (DR) event. The developed algorithm considers load appliances according to customer preferenc...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
Electricity demand response and residential load modeling play important roles in the development of home energy management system. Accurate load models are required to produce a load profile at residential level. In this paper, modeling of four load types that include air conditioner, electric water heater, washing machine, and refrigerator are de...
Article
Abstract: Demand response (DR) program can shift peak time load to off-peak time, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and allowing energy conservation. In this study, the home energy management scheduling controller of the residential DR strategy is proposed using the hybrid lightning search algorithm (LSA)-based artificial neural network (AN...

Recently, the technology of Home Energy Management System (HEMS) has expanded for the purpose of reducing energy consumption. This paper presents the development of a smart plug with a wireless Zigbee sensor for measuring power consumption of electrical appliances in the HEMS. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the power consumption of a wire...
Article
Full-text available
Power consumption of household appliances has become a growing problem in recent years because of increasing load density in the residential sector. Improving the efficiency, reducing energy and use of building integrated renewable energy resources are the major key for home energy management. This paper focuses on the development of simulation mod...

In this study, a nonintrusive load monitoring system is developed by analyzing the power signal obtained from a single point of power meter installation to detect ON/OFF load activities. A mathematically designed model with backpropagation neural network is utilized in load pattern recognition to decompose the load operation. Leveraging its unique...

The increasing number of consumer and household appliances causes the rise in home energy use. Therefore, home energy management (HEM) technology is essential to manage and reduce electricity consumption. The objective of this paper is to present an intelligent algorithm for HEM using rule base technique to manage the power consumption with demand...

The maximum output power of a photovoltaic (PV) system with a DC-DC converter depends mainly on the solar irradiance (G) and the temperature (T). Therefore, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mechanism is required to improve the overall system. The conventional MPPT approaches such as the perturbation and observation (P&O) technique have difficu...

The ambiguity resulting from the relationship between the inputs and outputs of the building which are characterized by nonlinear, large-scale systems, large thermal inertia, time variability, uncertain disturbance factors, etc. The analysis results of this study impost to take a stand against replacing the low-cost building with vernacular buildings by illustrating the effect of building inputs on outputs because of the building construction. In addition, analyze building material, cost and mass and their impact on the indoor temperature and relative humidity. Building model is required to study the feasibility of building material and how it affects the indoor thermal comfort.
