The Sea Turtles for Ocean Research and Monitoring (STORM) aims to evaluate the potential of animal-borne observations (aka bio-logging) to monitor the properties of tropical oceans. It is based on the instrumentation of various species of sea turtles evolving in the Indian Ocean. The main goals of this project are: (i) to document the ability of instrumented sea turtles to monitor the state of the Western Tropical Indian Ocean at high space-time resolution, (ii) to evaluate the use of animal-borne observations to assess and improve spaceborne observations as well as numerical ocean models, and (iii) to address key gaps in the spatial ecology of sea turtles living in the Western Indian Ocean, such as habitat characterization, assessment of adult migration routes and juvenile dispersal schemes, among others.
