The open science movement has reached management research and education. Around the world, management scholars discuss, probe and evaluate ways to make their work practices less ‘closed’ and more ‘open’. However, how exactly such new work practices change management knowledge and teaching depends to a large extent on the practitioners’ philosophica...
We are currently witnessing a fundamental structural transformation of the scientific public sphere, characterized by processes of specialization, metrification, internationalization, platformization, and visibilization. In contrast to explanations of this structural transformation that invoke a technological determinism, we demonstrate its histori...

The call for free access to research data and materials is becoming louder and louder from the political and scientific communities in Germany. More and more researchers are facing demands to open up qualitative research data for scientific purposes. They often have a general interest in sharing their data, but are unsure how to proceed. This hando...
Many early-career researchers are motivated by the prospect of creating knowledge that is useful, not just within but also beyond the academic community. Although research facilities, funders and academic journals praise this eagerness for societal impact, the path towards such contributions is by no means straightforward. In this article, we addre...
Digital prediction tools increasingly complement or replace other practices of coping with an uncertain future. The current COVID-19 pandemic, it seems, is further accelerating the spread of prediction. The prediction of the pandemic yields a pandemic of prediction. In this paper, we explore this dynamic, focusing on contagion models and their tran...
The public sphere is important for democracy and it is changing. Its current development is taking place at the point where three sequences of institutional change meet and interact: globalisation, commodification and the digitalisation of social dimensions. The contributions to this volume examine these developments in discussion with the public s...
Social media play a paradoxical role for matters of interest representation in global value-creation networks. On the one hand, social media platforms offer workers and trade unions the possibility to mobilize across geographical and institutional distances. On the other hand, these platforms also allow third parties to extract and process the digi...
Given the excessive power of Google and other large technology firms, transparency and accountability have turned into matters of great concern for organization scholars. So far, most studies adopt either a causal or critical perspective on the relationship between the two concepts. These perspectives are pitted against each other but share some ba...
Over the last few decades, two domains have undergone seemingly similar transformations: Closed innovation turned into open innovation, closed science into open science. In this essay we engage critically with recent calls for a close coupling of the two domains based on their apparent commonality: openness. Comparing the historically-specific ways...

Public sector organizations increasingly innovate through open innovation practices that originated in the private sector. To explain the use of these innovation practices, extant research has focused on enabling conditions at the individual and organizational level, but has paid little attention to extra-organizational factors such as culture. To...
With the rise of digital technologies, organizations are able to produce, process, and transfer large amounts of information at marginal cost. In recent years, these technological developments together with other macro-phenomena like globalization and rising distrust of institutions has led to unprecedented public expectations regarding organizatio...
Datafication, the technological development that emerged out of computerization and global interconnectedness, has spawned new forms of societal self-observations. In the present article I turn to the example of Open Data web portals – specialized websites that make large amounts of governmental datasets publicly available – to show how they relate...
Transparency is in vogue, yet oftentimes used as an umbrella concept for a wide array of phenomena. More focused concepts are needed to understand the form and function of different phenomena of visibility. In this article, we develop a definition of organizational transparency as systematic disclosure programs that meet the information needs of ot...
This is review of Mikkel Flyverbom's book "The Digital Prism: Transparency and Managed Visibilities in a Datafied World"
This is a book review of Richard Whittington's "Opening Strategy: Professional Strategists and Practice Change, 1960 to Today" (Oxford University Press, 2019). The book is reviewed by Maximilian Heimstädt.
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine how much value national governments worldwide place on political, economic, scientific, artistic, religious, legal, sportive, health-related, educational and mass media-related issues. This knowledge is critical as governments and policies are typically expected to be congruent with the importance th...
Predatory journals have emerged as an unintended consequence of the Open Access paradigm. Predatory journals only supposedly or very superficially conduct peer review and accept manuscripts within days to skim off publication fees. In this provocation piece, we first explain how predatory journals exploit deficiencies of the traditional peer review...
Juni 2019. Doch...
It was a hot, sunny day at the Academy of Management's Annual Meeting in Chicago earlier this year. Delegates were invited to participate in a walking conversation about the future of academic publishing. The question of the promenade was clear but complex: what does it mean to publish in today's world? Here, we summarise this event and offer three...

A common assumption in management studies is that organizations try to reduce the uncertainty of the future by accurate prediction and planning. This assumption is increasingly challenged by the much broader research on temporal and especially future-oriented practices. We build upon this line of research and argue that organizational practices of...
Agency is a focal and contested issue in studies on institutional change. One aspect that is not understood very well yet is how multiple dispersed actors achieve distributed agency when engaged in institutional work. Conceptualizing agency in its temporal orientation, we propose that effective distributed agency depends in a large part on how mult...

Vor a...

The research group "Reorganizing Knowledge Practices" at Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin investigates how a reorganization of scientific practices along digital principles can contribute to individual and societal self-determination. The relations between science, the individual and society are studied along the themes “impact”, “interdisciplinarity” and “iteration”. Grounded in organization theory and with a focus on qualitative research methods, the research group reflects on new knowledge practices outside and inside the Weizenbaum Institute and develops actionable insights for policy making, business and civil society.
Digital technologies increasingly affect the process of strategy-making – they impact how actors craft, understand, and execute strategies. Despite the impact of the ‘digital’ on strategy-making, strategy research on this topic is still in its infancy. The goal of this research network is thus to build a community of early scholars interested in the topic of digitalization of strategy-making, to develop a joint research agenda, and to stimulate high-quality research on this topic. Our network will draw on a strategy-as- practice perspective on the digitalization of strategy-making because this perspective proves particularly suitable to examine changes in strategy making based on the actual activities of strategy practitioners.
