Introduction
The main focus of research of Maxim Kulikovskiy is detection and species classification of autotroph microorganisms in freshwater and marine water bodies. He and his research group are well known for discovering and describing new algal taxa at the species and generic levels. His research on unicellular algae has practical application in pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, nanotechnology, biomimicry, and quality control of surface waters. His molecular genetic analysis of algal species serves as the basis for ecological monitoring using barcoding and for searching the most promising taxa of autotrophs in biotechnology. Maxim has discovered and described 17 new genera and more then 500 species of freshwater and marine algae from different regions around the world.
