Here we determine the individual age of a basal mosasaur (subfamily Halisaurinae) using zyga-pophyseal skeletochronology. This study is based on the cervical vertebra from the Late Cretaceous Beloe Ozero locality (Saratov Region). By of counting the zygapophyseal growth rings on the right prezygapophy-sis, it has been revealed that the age of the a...
The assemblage of fossil fish from of the Campanian deposits (Upper Cretaceous) in the locality Beloe Ozero consists of representatives of 20 taxa, of
which 15 are common with North America. This confirms the assumption about a free mutual exchange between the European and North American
marine ichthyofauna at the end of the Cretaceous period.
A diverse fish paleofauna occurs in the upper Campanian portion of the Rybushka Formation exposed near Saratov city in the Saratov Oblast, Russia. Twenty taxa have been identified, including two holocephalans (Ischyodus bifurcatus and Amylodon karamysh), twelve elasmobranchs (Synechodus sp., Cederstroemia sp., Cretalamna cf. C. borealis, C. cf. C....
The Campanian Beloe Ozero locality within the Rybushka Formation in Saratov Province, Russia, produces numerous isolated bones of sea turtles (clade Pan-Chelonioidea) identified as belonging to Protostega gigas, a giant protostegid, previously reliably known only from the Coniacian – Campanian of North America, and Pan-Chelonioidea indet. The Proto...
Plesiosaurian marine reptiles evolved a wide range of body shapes during the Jurassic and Cretaceous, including long-necked forms. Many Late Cretaceous members of the clade Elasmosauridae epitomized this part of the plesiosaurian morphological spectrum by evolving extremely long necks through somitogenesis (resulting in an increase in the number of...
The Campanian Beloe Ozero locality within the Rybushka Formation in Saratov Province, Russia, is one of the richest and most diverse Upper Cretaceous pterosaur localities in Europe. It produces identifiable remains of Pteranodontidae indet. and Azhdarchidae indet., as well as bones which can be attributed to either of these groups. The pteranodonti...
Plesiosaur specimens from the Upper Jurassic of European Russia are mainly referable to the genus Colymbosaurus Seeley, 1874, based on elongated propodials with extensive posterodistal expansion, and relatively short mid-cervical vertebrae. However, a historical specimen described by Bogolubov (1911) and subsequently revised as Plesiosauria indet....
All current data on the Jurassic and Cretaceous climates of Siberia based on isotope, paleontological, and lithological proxies are summarized. The late Pliensbachian cooling episode, early Toarcian warming, promptly replaced by long-term Middle Jurassic cooling at the end of the Toarcian, and a long-term warm interval in the Late Jurassic are clea...
Ophthalmosaurinae is a recently recognized clade of derived ichthyosaurs (marine reptiles) ranging from the Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) to the late Albian (late Early Cretaceous). Whereas the Middle-Late Jurassic ophthalmosaurine Ophthalmosaurus is often regarded as a hyperspecialized deep diver, very little is known about the anatomy, evolutionary...
The ichthyosaur fossil record is interspersed by several hiatuses, notably during the Cretaceous. This hampers our understanding of the evolution and extinction of this group of marine reptiles during the last 50 million years of its history. Several Cretaceous ichthyosaur taxa named in the past have subsequently been dismissed and re- ferred to th...
A new ophthalmosaurid ichthyosaur, Sveltonectes insolitus, gen. et sp. nov., is described from a sub-complete and three-dimensionally preserved specimen from the late Barremian of western Russia. This new taxon is supported by 11 cranial, dental, and postcranial autapomorphies, and is also characterized by features previously considered as autapomo...
An incomplete skeleton of the ichthyosaur Ophthalmosaurus icenicus Seeley, 1874 excavated in the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian beds south of the town of Syzran (Samara Region) is described. Members of the genus Ophthalmosaurus are characterized by a unique combination of characters, most of which are well-pronounced in the specimen described here: the ext...
Here we describe incomplete plesiosaur skeleton from the Upper Santonian of Saratov Region
(Russia), referable to Polycotylidae Williston, 1908. Hitherto remains of polycotylids from
Saratov Region were known only from the Cenomanian, Campanian and Maastrichtian deposits.
Polycotylid skeleton was found earlier in the Santonian deposits of Penza reg...
Here we describe a history of the discovery of the skull of ichthyosaur Pervushovisaurus
bannovkensis Arkhangelsky, 1998 in the Cenomanian deposits near Nizhnaya Bannovka village, Krasnoarmeysk district, Saratov region (Russia).
Marine reptile remains from the Jurassic of Moscow area were at first described in the year 1845, since then
considerable materials from the Callovian, Oxfordian and Volgian (Tithonian) strata were accumulated. Here
we review all available Jurassic marine reptile materials from Moscow area stored in museums and private collections. Callovian marine...
Plesiosaurs were the longest-surviving group of secondarily marine tetrapods, comparable in diversity to today’s cetaceans. During their long evolutionary history, which spanned the Jurassic and the Cretaceous (201 to 66 Ma), plesiosaurs repeatedly evolved long- and short-necked body plans [1,2]. Despite this postcranial plasticity, short-necked pl...
A proximal humerus fragment referred to as Azhdarchidae indet. from the Rybushka Formation
(Upper Cretaceous, Lower Campanian) of the Beloe Ozero locality in Saratov Region is described. The prox
imal articular surface is not saddleshaped, has a weakly convex profile in the frontal section. The most pos
teriorly projecting part of the proximal a...
Despite their profound adaptations to the aquatic realm and their apparent success throughout the Triassic and the Jurassic, ichthyosaurs became extinct roughly 30 million years before the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. Current hypotheses for this early demise involve relatively minor biotic events, but are at odds with recent understanding of the...

Until recently, Tholodus, a rare ichthyosaur with spherical tooth crowns of the pressing–crushing
type, has only been known from the Middle Triassic (Anisian) beds of Western Europe. A record of Tholodus
remains in the Karazin Formation (Middle Anisian) of southern Primorye (Russian Far East) significantly
expands the range of these reptiles.
The Upper Jurassic ichthyosaurs, characterized by the intermedium/humeral contact are known from several localities in Europe and North America. However, they are often described either briefly, or based on fragmentary material, resulting in a taxonomic tangle in most overviews. Grendelius McGowan, 1976 was previously synonymized with Brachypterygi...
During the Middle and Late Jurassic, pliosaurid plesiosaursevolved gigantic body size and a series of craniodental adaptations that have been linked to the occupation of an apex predator niche. Cretaceous pliosaurids (i.e. Brachaucheninae) depart from this morphology, being slightly smaller and lacking the macrophagous adaptations seen in earlier f...

Includes: pictures of a bivalve associated with YKM 68249/1-10, stratigraphic age data for all taxon incorporated in the phylogeny, revised phylogenetic coding for Anguanax zignoi, additional figures of strict consensus topologies, detailed results from the ancestral state reconstruction and R scripts. -Nexus files. With cha...
A jaw fragment of the rare ichthyosaur Tholodus is found for the first time in the Middle Triassic deposits of the Karazin Formation (South Primorye, Russian Far East). An analysis of the cephalopod systematics (Acrochordiceras kiparisovae Zharnikova, A. korobkovi Zharnikova, Acrochordiceras pacificum (Zharnikova), Stenopopanoceras? russkiense sp....
Here we describe a specimen from the Lower Callovian of Kostroma region, referable to the
short‐snouted pliosaurian genus Simolestes Andrews, 1909. This finding expands geographic
distribution of the genus Simolestes, and deepens our understanding of the Callovian herpetofauna
of the Russian Sea, which was apparently similar to that of Western Euro...
Here we gave a brief description of an ichthyosaurian remains from the Lower Valanginian of the European Russia (Kirov region) referable to the family Ophthalmosauridae Baur, 1887. The record of ichthyosaurs from the Berriasian–Barremian interval is extremely limited so even fragmental remains are of great interest. This finding confirms the assump...
A frontal of the mosasaur Clidastes propython from the Beloe Ozero locality in the Saratov Region (Rybushka Formation, Campanian Stage, Upper Cretaceous) is described. The investigated specimen differs from the frontals of other members of the genus Clidastes in the relatively straight lateral flanks. Reliable records of Clidastes outside America h...
During the Late Jurassic, important palaeogeographic events occurred in Eurasia, North America and Gondwana. Continental rift, subduction and orogeny produced different levels of marine inundation of terrestrial systems, with rising sea level. Shallow epicontinental seaways started to separate North America from Eurasia, Gondwana, and also between...
Rhomaleosaurid plesiosaurians were a common and ecologically significant component of Early Jurassic marine faunas, primarily as large-bodied predators. They declined in abundance and made their last fossil appearance in the Middle Jurassic. However, the geographic pattern of rhomaleosaurid extinction has thus far been obscured by spatial bias in t...
An ichthyosaurian skeletal remains assigned to the genera Arthropterygius and Ophthalmosaurus are described from
the Volgian deposits of the Komi Republic and Nenets Autonomous Region (Okrug) (Russia). These specimens
along with findings from Svalbard provide an opportunity to draw some preliminary conclusions on the distribution
of ichthyosaurs du...
A new species of ichthyosaur genus Undorosaurus from the Volgian stage of Moscow is described based on an incomplete forelimb. It differs from congeners basically in the form and position of pisiforme. With the application of cladistic method the phylogenetic position of two genera Undorosaurus and Paraophthalmosaurus in the system of Ichthyosaurid...
Tholodus is rare ichthyosaur with durophagous dentition, until recently known only from the Anisian deposits of Western Europe. Finding of Tholodus remains in the Anisian deposits (Karazinskaya suite formation) of Primorsky Kray significantly expands our understanding of the area of distribution of these reptiles and confirms previously suggested a...
The ichthyosaur fossil record is interspersed by several hiatuses, notably during the Cretaceous. This hampers our understanding of the evolution and extinction of this group of marine reptiles during the last 50 million years of its history. Several Cretaceous ichthyosaur taxa named in the past have subsequently been dismissed and referred to the...
13-14th-century Juchid plated military belts with dragon images are considered in the article. Their study has shown that the tradition of wearing them had been borrowed by the Mongols from China together with corresponding imperial symbols, dragon images included. In the authors’ opinion, the images of these mythological creatures were used by bot...

This new taxon is supported by 11 cranial, dental, and postcranial autapomorphies, and is also characterized by features previously considered as autapomo...
A new elasmosaurid genus and species, Alexeyisaurus karnoushenkoi, from the Lower-Middle Norian (Wilczek Formation) of the Upper Triassic of the island of Wilczek Land (Franz Josef Land)
is described based on an incomplete skeleton. The new form combines characters of typical late plesiosaurs and structural
features unique to this form. It is proba...
The premaxilla of a mosasauroid lizard from the Lysaya Gora 3 locality in Saratov (Upper Cretaceous, Cenomanian) is described.
To date, the oldest known mosasaur remains have been dated Turonian. The premaxilla is most similar in morphology to that
of Russellosaurus from the Turonian of the United States; however, the absence of sufficient diagnost...
A new azhdarchid genus and species, Volgadraco bogolubovi gen. et sp. nov., is described based on an anterior fragment of the mandibular symphysis (mandibular beak) and some postcranial
elements from the Rybushka Formation (Upper Cretaceous, Lower Campanian) of the Shirokii Karamysh 2 locality, Saratov Region.
The new taxon is intermediate in size...
A new ichthyosaur, Platypterygius ochevi sp. nov., from the Albian-Cenomanian of the Voronezh Region is described based on a partial forefin. It differs from congeners
in the very large facet for the lageniformis on the humerus.
