The 2016–2017 seismic events that struck central Italy led the Government to carry out a project to produce the third level Seismic Microzonation studies in 138 municipalities. These activities have involved many experts in different disciplines such as geology, geomorphology, geophysics, seismology and geotechnical engineering. This project repres...

Site effects in consequence of the 2016–2018 Central Italy seismic sequence “marked the fate” of many villages located close to the epicenters along the Apennine chain. Pescara del Tronto, a small settlement located on a mountain slope in the municipality of Arquata del Tronto, (AP) is very representative of such territories since, early after the...

Although based on the same basic principles as on Earth, planetary geological-geomorphological mapping has some peculiarities which needs to be addressed in order to standardize the technical and scientific approach. Planetary mapping is data-dependent (i.e., images resolution, availability of spectral data, etc.), which implies differences between...

There are many archaeological and geological-geotechnical studies concerning underground cavities in the territory of Rome. These cavities constitute an intricate network of tunnels under the city, developing multi-layer systems, located at different depths. These voids are all of anthropogenic origin, dug in various ways, for various purposes (bui...

This paper describes the contents of the new Hydrogeological Map of the City of Rome (1:50,000 scale). The map extends to the entire municipality (1285 km2) and is based on both the most recent scientific studies on the groundwater field and new survey activities carried out in order to fill the data gaps in several areas of the examined territory....

Groundwater knowledge and mapping wide urban areas is always a challenge for hydrogeologists, because of many interactions occurring between natural processes and anthropic activities, and also the complexity of survey. This is especially complicated in the case of complex hydrogeological setting as in the case of Rome.Rome is located in a extensio...

The aim of this project is to collect the knowledge of geologists who have already studied the hydrogeology of Rome, in order to realize an updated hydrogeological map of the City. The Hydrogeological Map of Rome, 1:50.000 scale, has been realized starting by data collected in advance. In detail, water table shapes and data collected during previo...

Since the earliest comunities settled in the Indus basin, stones and minerals had a preeminent role connected to social status and religious elite as well as the Italian excavations (IsMEO and National Museum of Oriental Art in Rome) have demonstrated. Many petrographic publications have been produced about materials from geological surveys and ar...

The library of ISPRA is characterized by a vast collection of books and geological maps whose acquisition can be traced back to 1867. The core of the library's collection consists of more than 15,000 geological maps representing the entire Italian territory. The proposed digitization of cartographic material project is planned to keep intact the or...

An innovative approach to hydrogeological mapping based on quantitative analysis is shown in this paper. It gives some cartographical solutions for an immediate evaluation of the groundwater resources and their spatial distribution. All relevant aquifers, springs and their regime, geological and structural setting and their hydraulic role should be...

Catalogue of the artificial cavities on the italian territory: geological, geotechnical and physical aspects of artificial cavities.
Project
The National Geodatabase on Artificial Cavities (GNCA) is a new geodatabase that will be published on the Geological Survey of Italy Portal and that will allow you to view and download information relating to the artificial cavities registered in the Italian territory. In this way, information will be available on the location, extension, use, geological characteristics and instability proneness of the artificial cavities censed. To implement the GNCA, ISPRA signed a scientific collaboration agreement with the Italian Speleological Society in November 2020.
