The aim of the article is to describe the historical background and the birth of a relatively new discipline consisting in the digital evolution of classical stereotomy. “Stereotomy 1.0” comprises the early development of the discipline primarily related to stonecutting. The new discipline, “Stereotomy 2.0” goes beyond this early concept to embrace...

Flowin’ is a pedestrian footbridge submitted for the “Fuxi River Seven Bridges Conceptual Design International Competition”. The generation of the form was guided by a series of parameters: the relationship with the anthropic and natural context, the tectonics, and its structural behavior. Regarding the first two aspects, the starting point is repr...

This contribution describes an operative research activity within the teaching of digital design and fabrication to Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) artisans. The didactic approach described arises from the lack of academic paths thought for AEC’s artisans, highlighting the reason why this aspect is relevant for both the AEC and the...

The paper describes the parametric design, fabrication and construction of the Stone PolySphere, an installation that investigates the potential of digital fabrication applied to the stone industry. It is a lithic sphere with a diameter of 1.4 m, composed by a massive hemisphere below and a stereotomic hemisphere above. The prototype ideally summar...
Chapter
The paper concerns the theme of topological interlocking blocks for architecture and the relationship between flat stereotomic assemblies and curved morphologies. After a brief history of the subject, theoretical foundations and speculative research are presented. The research includes several built full-scale prototypes and architectural elements....

The chapter explains the researches who the New Fundamentals Research Group is carrying out on the digital update of stereotomy. Between the various experiments, the chapter focuses on the group or prototypes designed by the geometry of the hyperbolic paraboloid, both at the macro (architectural organism) and micro scale (architectural elements). S...
Thesis
