The article treats the demand of women workforce in Italy and in Southern Europe, hired to satisfy the need of care activities in the families, and producing an international stratification of family care. Then it talks about the ways in which mothers separated from their children try to continue to perform their parental duties, notwithstanding fr...
This article elaborates on the activities developed by various actors from the civil society in favour of non-deported refused asylum seekers (NDRAS) through the lens of ‘de-bordering solidarity’. Drawing on qualitative data collected in two small Italian cities ruled by anti-immigrant coalitions, this study explores the rationales and outcomes of...
This paper analyzes the experiences of children of immigrants coming to Italy from Turkey. It does so by using in-depth interviews and looking at how they conceptualize their sense of belonging to their home country and the transnational ties that they maintain in relation to their parents' experience. The participants in this research grew up in f...
This paper has two purposes. The first is theoretical: to revise use of the concept of moral economy in migration studies, and the related concept of deservingness. I will identify different versions and meanings, showing their significant contribution to the understanding of migration issues, but discussing their lack of consideration of a particu...
This article advances understandings of collective remittances practices by elaborating on the case of the Armenian diaspora in the Netherlands. It argues that the collection, management, and distribution of collective remittances are crucial aspects of how diasporic immigrant groups function. Hence, collective remittances represent a lens through...
What is a research brief and what does it stands for? A research brief is less than a policy note and more than an individual expression of research interest. It brings together the knowledge of this working group. It aims to think outside the box and promotes interdisciplinary thought. It delineates future lines of research and explains why these...
This article aims at discussing the involvement of “humanitarian” actors, stemming from civil society, in treatment of the issue of refugees’ reception. It suggests the concept of “de-bordering solidarity,” to express the political meaning of such mobilizations. With this term, it refers to various forms of support provided by activists and volunte...
Resettlement of refugees in third countries has seen a growing
intervention by various civil society actors in the last few years,
starting from the Canadian experience. Also in Europe, these
sponsorship schemes are developing, despite a general restriction
of asylum policies. This paper will analyse a case of civil society’s
sponsorship, which has...
Immigrant volunteering is usually absent from the debate on the reconfiguration of citizenship ‘from below’. Indeed, it has been generally considered a conservative force, if anything, an instrument of fuller integration. Building on 25 interviews with young migrant volunteers, this paper aims to fill this gap. It shows that, even if immigrant volu...
Immigrant volunteering is a disputed topic. For some scholars, an important instrument for the social integration of immigrants, while others frame immigrant volunteerism as a regime of 'ethical citizenship' centred around the paradigms of 'civic integration' and 'deservingness'. Our research collected the experiences of hundreds of migrant volunte...
The multi-level governance (MLG) approach is widely used to understand the complex processes of immigration policymaking. In this literature review, we consider both (i) the vertical dimension of MLG: the local, regional, national, European, or even global level; and (ii) the horizontal dimension of MLG: the relations between public and non-public...
In Italy, the strong desire to take care of the elderly at home and within the family opens the border to migrant care workers. Despite an increasing focus on the closure of borders, migrant care workers are considered desirable immigrants and are generally socially accepted in Italian society because they are believed to fulfil an indispensable ro...
In this article – based on 100 in-depth interviews with divided and reunited Bangladeshi families in Italy, Bangladesh, and London – we discuss how remittances are influenced by gender relations within the family, what social meanings they assume, what family memberships they reinforce, how the intertwining between migration and family cycle affect...
Immigrants’ informal welfare. Ethnic churches and social inclusion
processes in Milan
In Italy, over the last decades, migration flows have generated an
unprecedented religious pluralism. However, the phenomenon is still
neglected within migration studies. Moreover, the over-representation of
Islam as empirical focus has limited the field of resear...
Big international events, such as Olympic games or International Expositions, are stimulating a relevant social phenomenon in recent years, that is also visible in other circumstances, e.g. mass emergencies or humanitarian crises: a mobilisation of volunteers to a single issue, for a short period, but with an intensive dedication. This occurs outsi...
Scholarship has sought to develop theoretical frameworks to set order on the rather muddled web of actors, interactions and tensions involved in asylum and immigration policies. The article considers three of them: the “venue shopping approach”, the “multi-level governance approach” and critical humanitarian studies.
The purpose is to contribute to...
The intervention finds three relevant points in Faist’s book. The first is the increasing selectivity of migration policies, highlighted by the “mobility paradox”, namely the tension between aspirations to find a better life abroad and political opportunities to migrate to the global North. The second point is the vision of social protection across...
This article investigates the relationship between integration processes and religious participation through an analysis of migrant churches established in the city of Milan. While in Europe most public opinion and literature are focused on Islam, and religion is often viewed as an impediment and barrier to integration, this work wants instead to d...
‘Going beyond the challenge’ means looking at the phenomenon of migration in its complexity, through a multi and interdisciplinary approach. The chapters that make up the first part offer an over-view of the phenomenon, with a reflection on the numbers of migrations in Italy followed by an in-depth examination of its international dimension. The se...

Immigration has transformed the social, economic, political and cultural landscapes of global cities such as London, Melbourne, Milan and Amsterdam. The term 'superdiversity' captures a new era of migration-driven demographic diversifications and associated complexities. Superdiversity is the future or, in many cases, the current reality of neighbo...
Supporters of irregular migrants play an important role in the interactions between irregular migrants and the state. This article aims to shed light on the variety of actors involved in the support of irregular migrants and what kind of help they provide. The article asks whether this kind of help should be seen as purely humanitarian or as a form...

Programma Scuola autunnale Mondi Migranti 2020: Brescia, 5-8 ottobre

Abstract The reception of asylum seekers in Italy has become an increasingly contentious issue: many actors, public and private, are involved at various levels of government, and cooperative behaviour cannot be taken for granted. The multi-level governance approach sheds light on the possible patterns in vertical relations, while it does not effect...
The article argues that the governance of immigration, especially at local level, can be considered a “battleground” involving diverse actors. Beyond the idea of a “negotiated order” as the result of the interaction among actors (mainly institutional) in the multilevel governance framework, the management of asylum at a local level is the outcome o...
The chapter analyses how local policies of exclusion have been redirected in recent years towards a particular category of immigrants: namely asylum seekers, representing them as dangerous, undeserving and welfare scroungers. But these policies do not remain unchallenged. On the other side, local actors from the civil society mobilise in favour of...
This article explores the issue of immigrant women entrepreneurship. It focuses on the emergence of new points of view on self‐employed migrant women and in particular their search for independence. With the support of qualitative research carried on in Italy, it will set out a typology of motivations and strategies to become self‐employed in which...
During the fall 2015, Sweden had a large increase of asylum seekers, following an out-break of a civil war in Syria. As a consequence, the absorption capacity of the Swedish municipalities was stretched in terms of eg.schooling and housing. The parties were internally divided, and subsequently the differences of opinions were apparent within the sa...
The settlement of Christian immigrants in Italy, is producing an evident phenomenon of pluralisation and de-Westernization of Christianity, including Catholicism; first of all, despite the debate on Islamization, pluralism concerns the main Italian religious denominations. This study has explored six ethnic Churches in Milan, both Catholic and evan...
This article investigates the interconnections between migration to Europe for asylum and the multiple ‘crises’ of the border regime that have occurred in recent decades. Drawing on 22 months of ethnographic research with refugees in Italy and Germany, the article highlights the tensions between migration policy and legislation at the structural le...
This report has been prepared within the framework of the Erasmus+ project “Educating Social Partners towards Ethnic Diversity” funded by the Foundation for the Management of European Lifelong Learning Programmes of Cyprus (IDEP).
Empirical research on sources of prejudice and anti-immigrant hostility has grown considerably over the years, and the literature on the topic has become substantial firstly in classical receiving countries and in recent years also in Europe. This work analyses the anti-immigrant attitudes in Italy. The main results of this study are three. The fir...
In recent years, inflows of asylum seekers have become the main issue in the public discourse on immigration and borders have acquired a new relevance in politics. Southern Europe has often been seen as a point of entry into the inner part of the continent, and governments have been pressured to act as border guards of the EU. However, tragedies in...
Southern European countries have rapidly changed their status, transforming from sending to (primarily) receiving countries in the 1980s. They followed their North-Western partners in the establishment of more rigid border controls, but this action conflicted with their labour market needs. In connection with the economic crisis that started in 200...
Because unauthorized immigrants are officially excluded from formal labour markets, housing markets and most welfare provisions, they can settle only if they find other sources of work, income, housing, and social protection. In this regard, a crucial role is played by intermediaries, i.e., people or institutions who favour the entrance of immigran...
Irregular immigration is a salient field of contemporary politics, involving interactions and clashes among globalization forces, political strategies, internal interests, humanitarian values, border nostalgia, and the aspirations, interests and needs of the people involved. The social conditions of asylum seekers and irregular migrants are not pro...
Migration policies are selective and unequally restrictive, targeting in particular “poor” migrants coming from the Global South. However, despite harsh policies, irregular immigration persists. Several interests of global societies conflict with border closure, and the policies that are implemented do not always correspond with declared policies....
Migrations are a crucial aspect of the globalization of current societies, as the Introduction to this book (Chap. 1) has highlighted. They can be defined as a form of “globalization from below”, carried out by common people in opposition to financial or economic globalization fostered by powerful vested interests and elitist actors. At the same ti...
Focusing on the dynamics of irregular immigration in Southern EU Member States, this book analyses how the phenomenon is managed at national and local levels in different legal and political systems. In doing so, it answers vital policy questions regarding the continued existence of irregular migration, pathways to legality, and relations between u...
This article focuses on the provision of services to immigrant workers as a gateway to further inclusion and active participation in union activities. The experiences of the two main national unions in Italy are contextualized within the framework of other similar models, such as community unionism and worker centres. The specific contribution of t...
Italian trade unions have long since promoted the defense and inclusion of immigrant workers through the promotion, within their organizations, of specific services for immigrants providing information, guidance, and bureaucratic assistance, thus enhancing the growth of immigrant members within the unions. However, only recently unions have started...
The economic crisis started in 2008 has heavily hit labour markets even in rich regions, spreading unemployment also among adult workers, who previously were in Italy quite well protected against economic downturns. The article presents a research study, conducted in Lombardy between September, 2009 and April, 2011, using different methods: a surve...
In recent years the impact of the economic crisis on the labour markets of Western countries has been deeply analysed, but its effect on the labour market condition of immigrants is not yet entirely clear. On one hand, immigrants tend to enter into labour-intensive job positions, such as construction and manufacturing, which have been strongly affe...
Despite many efforts to combat irregular immigration, there is a
widespread perception of a failure of public policies in this field.
But because unauthorised immigrants are officially excluded from
formal labour markets, housing markets and most welfare
provisions, they can settle if they find other sources of work,

The arrival of a significant number of refugees is perceived and depicted in Italy as identical to that which occurred in the rest of Europe, as a grave danger and an invasion that is must be addressed. The perception of massive migratory phenomenon are also thought of as something that must be contained at all cost. The key aim of this article is...
Building on a comparative study of the urban ‘adaptations’ of multiculturalism in eight European
cities, this paper addresses four questions: 1) the changing relations between national and local
immigrant policies; 2) the ways in which such policies are locally reshaped; 3) the involvement
of civil society in the urban governance of immigration; 4)...
In recent years international migrations have become one of the major issues on the political agenda of many governments. The so-called “refugee crisis” in Europe has dramatically increased this trend, rousing alarm in public opinion, demands for protection of national borders, tensions between states, the electoral decline of established parties a...
Programma della Scuola estiva: Genova 27 giugno-1 luglio 2016
The permanent settlement of immigrants of foreign origin, and then the formation of the second and third generations, has long contributed to re-launching the debate on the content and limits of the institution of citizenship, bringing into question the close connection with the national states. The increasing number and the growing diversity of th...
Religions, immigration and secularization of the States: balancing and transformation This article aims at summarizing the main conclusions of the essays collected in this volume by highlighting the common findings and the d...
The article develops three arguments: 1) collective regularizations, very visible and aimed to involve big numbers of immigrants, occur mainly in Southern Europe, where segmented labour markets have pulled huge volumes of irregular labour between the end of '80 and the economic crisis started in 2008; 2) common regulations of entries in the Europea...
In recent years Italy has become an important destination for migrants— about five million of them—originating from different countries About one million are Catholic. The Catholic Church supports them in several ways: it acts in the political game, claiming more rights for immigrants. Furthermore, Catholic institutions provide many services to imm...
Immigration defined as "illegal" is a typical area where the dominant representations differ from social phenomena. Starting from this point, this article deals with two issues. The first is the selective treatment of irregular immigration by receiving societies. Diverse interests and social representations of irregular immigration tend to redefine...
Immigrant female and also male workers are increasingly involved in the supply of care services in the countries of the Global North, and they are especially so in elderly care. In the countries of southern Europe, but to an increasing extent also in countries like Germany and Austria, the care work of immigrants is embedded in a specific care regi...
Official policies toward irregular immigrants have hardened; but
unauthorized sojourners nevertheless remain in their receiving
countries. Their human rights must be in some way protected, and
responses must be given to their social needs. Civil society organizations
often provide these responses, in particular, by furnishing
nonurgent medical care...
Immigration issues have gained salience at political agendas of governments
and in public discourse in most countries of the global North. Public attention
for the presence of immigrants and their offspring has mobilized outspoken
moral positions over the last 20 years in Europe and the United States. These
positions have translated into increasing...
All across European receiving societies, the mainstream political discourse is displaying increasing disaffection with multiculturalism. It is primarily at the level of local policies, though, that the social inclusion of immigrants and the governance of ethno-cultural diversity are negotiated. Building on a comparative study of the urban ‘adaptati...
This chapter focuses on the perspective of employers within what I call an “invisible welfare”: a system of assistance parallel to the official welfare system, managed by families and based on the work carried out by migrants. The corresponding evolution of the role of traditional care providers (previously the women of the family) is of the foremo...
In qu...

The idea of the active role of migrants in supporting the socio-economic development
of their homeland is the subject of growing interest in academic and institutional
debates. This expectancy can be framed theoretically in the notion of transnationalism,
where the migrant is seen as an actor placed simultaneously in two or more social fields:
