Introduction
Matthias Razum is Vice President e-Research at FIZ Karlsruhe, a not-for-profit company providing scientific and technical information. He works with universities and research institutes in Germany and abroad in the fields of information services, research data management, digital longterm preservation, and virtual research environments. Current projects include the German Digital Library, German Archives Portal, RADAR, TRANSRAZ, NFDI4Chem, NFDI4Culture, and openTA.

Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) offers everyone unrestricted access to Germany’s cultural and scientific heritage, that is, access to millions of books, archived items, images, sculptures, pieces of music and other sound documents, as well as films and scores, from all over Germany. As a central, national portal, the DDB is aiming to bring together and network digital content from all of Germany’s cultural and scientific institutions. The DDB is brought to you by a number of renowned German memory institutions. FIZ Karlsruhe as one of the partners is responsible for software development and hosting of the DDB.
Project
The aim of the project is to develop a virtual research environment (VFU) for object- and space-related research in the humanities. The topographical appearance of a district in historic Nuremberg is exemplified in four time levels (1620, 1817, 1910 and the present), consisting of georeferenced 2D maps and 3D models that serve as a navigation structure. The innovative approach lies in linking the interactive city model with research literature and source materials (text, images, sound), which are directly assigned to the 3D objects of the model by means of hotspots.
