Introduction
I am an interdisciplinary urban scholar whose work spans Architecture, Urban Planning, Geography, and Urban Studies to interrogate the relationship between urban space and politics. My research focuses on how cities can be reimagined and realized as critical terrains of politicisation. I hold a PhD in Geography and Planning from AUTh and an MSc from The University of Manchester. My areas of interest are urban commons, urban political movements, housing and public space.

Since the 2008 global financial crisis, foreign real-estate investment in Greece has been framed as a key factor for the country's economic recovery and the reactivation of the real-estate and construction sectors that had been stagnating for almost ten years. Attracting foreign real-estate investment has become an important state goal, supported b...

Since 2015, Greece has emerged as a major stopover in refugees' journey seeking a better life in Europe. In Greece, as in the rest of Europe, the long summer of migration has given rise to official discourses about 'Europe's refugee crisis' and the management of migration flows. The Greek state in collaboration with global, European and national ac...
This article engages with the political struggles staged by illegalised migrants and activists in solidarity amid the long summer of migration and the “Greek crisis”. Grounding its analysis on Orfanotrofio’s housing squat in Thessaloniki, it narrates how such struggles are articulated to politicise migration and stage the equality of newcomers—migr...

This chapter examines new hybrid forms of ‘ownership’ as they appear in and through public space in crisis-ridden Thessaloniki. Formally induced experiments of participation and “co-ownership” of public space are explored in parallel to citizen-led initiatives of everyday praxis and appropriation. Evidence from Thessaloniki suggests that multiple a...

The recent refugee crisis in Greece has fuelled a heated debate in media, academic and activist circles. One of its aspects that is not as known and well documented is the common struggles of locals and refugees and their emergence in and through urban space. Through a grounded examination of the “Orfanotrofio-housing squat for immigrants” in Thess...
In the midst of the more-than-financial crisis in Greece, a plethora of urban experiments (cooperatives, social clinics, grocery stores, etc.) sprang out in the cities. The aims of these spaces of experimentation vary fromstruggling to address the lack of social policiesto seeking to establish alternatives to the ongoing neoliberal restructuring.Ho...
In recent years, urban informality has been the subject of renewed attention in urban studies, sociology and political economy. Following postcolonial theory (McFarlane, 2008, Robinson, 2002), we seek to surpass modernist dichotomies such as formal/informal and centre/periphery, as they re-produce a “colonial paternalism”. Thus, we move beyond bina...
