Introduction
We focus on novel strategies against difficult to treat bacterial infections. This includes e.g. developement of fast diagnostic tests for antimicrobial resistance, PK/PD optimized antibiotic treatment and novel approaches to eradicate biofilms. Our research covers the entire range from bench to bedside. A second research focus comprises pneumonia and pneumococcal vaccines.

Pneumococcal infections elicited by Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) (pneumonia, otitis media, sinusitis, meningitis) are frequently occurring diseases that are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality even in developed countries. Pneumococci colonise the nasopharynx of up to 50% of children, and up to 5% of adults are pneumococc...

Background: The unfavourable safety profile of aminoglycosides and the synergistic effects observed in vitro have prompted the development of novel dual β-lactam therapies, e.g. ampicillin/ceftriaxone or ampicillin/ceftaroline, for the treatment of Enterococcus faecalis endocarditis. Objectives: For comparison with in vitro chequerboard assay re...

In 2019, the American Thoracic Society (ATS) / Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) issued a substantial revision of the 2007 guideline on community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Despite generalization of infectious disease guidelines is limited due substantial geographic differences in microbiological etiology and antimicrobial resistance, th...

Background: For patients with bacteraemia caused by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus anti-staphylococcal penicillins (ASPs) or cefazolin are agents of choice. While ASPs are potentially nephrotoxic, cefazolin may be less effective in some S. aureus strains due to an inoculum effect. Objectives: To perform a systematic literature review a...

Introduction: Two next-generation pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), a 15- and a 20-valent PCV (PCV15 and PCV20), have recently been licensed for use in adults, and PCV15 has also been licensed in children. We developed a dynamic transmission model specific for Germany, with the aim to predict carriage prevalence and invasive pneumococcal dis...

Rapid screening of hospital admissions to detect asymptomatic carriers of resistant bacteria can prevent pathogen outbreaks. However, the resulting isolates rarely have their genome sequenced due to cost constraints and long turn-around times to get and process the data, limiting their usefulness to the practitioner. Here we used real-time, on-devi...

Understanding persistent cellular and humoral immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 will be of major importance to terminate the ongoing pandemic. Here, we assessed long-term immunity in individuals with mild COVID-19 up to 1 year after a localized SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. CoNAN was a longitudinal population-based cohort study performed 1.5 months, 6 months,...

BACKGROUND Experts are increasingly sounding the alarm: the ongoing war in Ukraine could lead to the spread of antimicrobial resistance across Europe. OBJECTIVE Our report focused on the genomic analysis of multi-drug resistant pathogens collected from Ukrainian soldiers and refugees who were treated in a German hospital. METHODS In 2022, seven U...

Disinfection is a key strategy to reduce the burden of infections. The contact of bacteria to biocides—the active substances of disinfectants—has been linked to bacterial adaptation and the development of antimicrobial resistance. Currently, there is no scientific consensus on whether the excessive use of biocides contributes to the emergence and s...
