The main goal of the SIT-REM project is the design and the development of an interoperable web-GIS environment for the information retrieval and data editing/updating of the geobotanical and wildlife map of Marche Region. The vegetation, plant landscape and faunistic analysis allow the realization of a regional information system for wildlife-geobo...
Article
In this work we studied some characteristics of nesting sites of red-backed shrike Lanius collurio in some areas of the Marche Region (Central Italy). These areas are characterized by a temperate climate and by mainly agricultural cover. We analyzed the breeding site macrohabitat and the nest microhabitat. Results showed a prevalence of shrubs, mos...

Food-pass consists of the offering of food, mainly by males to females, in its two main forms: ground and aerial food-pass. The display is performed by all the harriers also in a ritualized form: flight-play, during which prey is not passed. These displays, which constitute the most frequent behaviour pattern in Circus pygargus during the breeding...

Using monitoring data and habitat variables to model the distribution of bird species in the Marches region (Italy). During the last century several populations of birds in Europe have severely decreased, which has been explained with habitat modifications and common use of intensive agriculture. The often rapid changes of the ecosystems can cause...

During the last century several populations of birds in Europe have severely decreased, which has been explained with habitat modifications and common use of intensive agriculture. The often rapid changes of the ecosystems can cause the loss of several animal species even in few years, and the reduction of species diversity is currently considered...

The project of the Ecological Network of Marche region (R.E.M.) done for conservation of biodiversity of the regional territory is showed. SIC and ZPS of Natura 2000 network constitute the principal structure of the regional network and their monitoring was carried out through a specific methodological program. The proposed diagram has a complex st...

The extreme difficulty in relating data on the presence, diffusion and dispersion of the populations of middle-and large-sized vertebrates and the heterogeneity of the ecological structure (habitat) of the territory is evident in the scientific literature. Studies on vegetation have produced very plausible and effective models, and maps of the diff...

Tissue samples from 56 bird and 11 mammal species of different trophic levels, collected from 1994 to 1995 from the Urbino-Pesaro area in the Marche region of central Italy, were analyzed for the presence of organochlorine compounds (polychlorinated biphenyls and p,p'-DDE) and heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, and Hg). Results revealed interspecies differe...

W½ studied the mating behavior of Montagu's Harriers (Circus pygargus) and recorded the incidence of extra-pair copulations (EPC) and refusal of females to copulate. The average duration of copulations was 4.9 sec and they were most frequent between 1000-1400 H. Each pair averaged 105 successful copulations per clutch (range = 31-245). About 59% of...

The present study was carried out in Le Cesane (east-central Italy) during thc winter of 1992. The environment is a mosaic of woodland (mostly conifer plantations), sown and uncultivated lands. A total of 89 scats of stone marten Martes foina was collected. Standard techniques were applied for analysing the content of scats. Diet composition is giv...
Article
The diet of the cormorant has been studied by analysis of ca 500 pellets collected at the roost in the Po delta during winter 1988/1989. Most important fish found in cormorant diet were Atherina boyeri, Mugilidae and Dicentrarchus labrax. Prey items were taken with different frequency in different months of the winter.

Abstract Morphometric variation of 16 characters of 65 adult male skulls of Martes foina from North-Western Italy and Central-Western Switzerland was examined. Analysis of variance showed significant differences among these local populations especially related to the masticatory apparatus. These features were strictly correlated with the second fac...

Abstract In order to evaluate the density of the red fox and of the domestic cat, 55 transects were made from 1986 to 1989 using spotlight census method in three sample areas. The mean density of foxes agreed substantially with its biological cycle and the hightes values (2.01 foxes/km² in spring and 4.3 foxes/km² in winter) were recorded in the st...

Abstract From 1979 to 1985 the diet of the fox was studied by the analysis of 609 stomachs of which 534 were full. The gathered data were expressed as frequency of occurrence. Small mammals (F%=52.2), garbage (F%=36.3) and vegetables (35.6) were the main food categories, followed, in order of relative importance, by domestic animals, invertebrates,...

Abstract The Authors analyse the contents of 401 stomachs of foxes Vulpes vulpes (135 of which were empty) collected during the period 1971-74 in a mixed agriculture-pasture-woodland area. The frequency of occurrence of the following food categories was found: 1. Small Vertebrates (mainly rodents) 72.6%; 2. Medium-sized Vertebrates (prevalently har...

Abstract The percentage of frequency (F%) of Invertebrates was recorded by the analisys of 90 stomach contents randomly selected from 609 stomachs collected in the northern Marches throughout the 1979-85. Insects were the staple food and were represented by Coleoptera (F%=81.1) followed by Orthoptera (F%=16.4), Hymenoptera (F%=0.9) and Lepidoptera...
